CHARLES CONVERSE CHATFIELD, I (1841-1876): Charles was a graduate of Yale
College, and, after his graduation resided in New Haven, CT conducting the 'College
Courant', of which he was both editor and proprietor. He afterwards became the editor of
the New England School Journal, which position he continued to fill, worthily, until his
death.
He was the class poet and was a leading member of the West Chapel street Church, now
merged in the Trinity Church, having with his brother George been in it since his college
days, when they, with others, started the Sunday School which was the nucleus of the
church.
Charles helped found the newspaper at Yale 'The Courant'. He also publisher 'Barker's
Chemistry', 'Boggs Four Years at Yale', 'Day's Logical Tracts', 'Half Hours with Modern
Scientists', and sermons by President Woolsey, etc. He also kept the Yale college
bookstore.

At the close of 1874, Messrs. C. C.Chatfield and T. W. Bicknell purchased the right of publishing the Massachusetts Teacher, and it was merged in the New England Journal of Education.

Survivors include: one son Scott (Tomara) of Ypsilanti; nine grandchildren, Cody, Kyle (Racheal), Scott, Tanner, Jalen, Alexis, Raven, Jaci and Tate; and great grandson Josiah. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son John David Chatfield. The funeral service will be 11 am Monday, August 13, 2018 at Stark Funeral Service with Pastor Joel Sowards officiating. Cremation will follow.

Dear Cheryl,
I do not remember any of Uncle Chalie's relatives, except for a brother who visited him from time to time. I remember that both men were kind gentlemen. I loved my Uncle Charlie. My mother died when my sister and I were 6 and 4, and after my father remarried, we moved to Hasbrouck Heights. My uncle Charlie and aunt Ruthie moved to Wood-Ridge NJ. (next town).They had three boys Charlie (age approx.57), John (age approx.53) and Gary (age approx.49). We all attended the First Methodist Church of HH. Even though my step-mother was a very reserved person, Uncle Charlie and Aunt Ruthie made every effort to make her feel welcome. They invited us over their house many times. If I close my eyes, I can still see the layout. We had alot of fun times there. As I said, Uncle Charlie was a kind, warm, outgoing and generous spirited person. We grew apart I guess because my step-mother felt not too happy being with the sister of her husband's late wife. The Chatfields moved to Somerset NJ by 1970 and the last time I saw Uncle Charlie and Aunt Ruthie was at their home on the day their son Charlie got married (circa 1971).
I saw on the ancestry.com web page that I previously wrote about another name of John Chatfield e-mail name jchatfield@aol.com. This could be Uncle Charlie's second son. Have you ever written him? If he is not related to you, then I will write him to see if he is my cousin. Finding out something about Ruthie Heck and that particular Heck family has proven laborious and, at times, fruitless. This family is very mysterious...you know they existed, but it's almost impossible to find out anything about them...unless one wants to spend money through the on-line detective agencies. My sister Maureen can give you a lot more info about that I can. Some stories that I heard when growing up were that the Heck family girls lived in a beautiful home right near the Lindbergh home and that the houses were called "the mirrored mansions".
We also were told that Aunt Ruthie's father and his brothers ran the ticket department at Carnegie Hall and that during the 1930's and 1940's Eleanor Roosevelt would call them personally to book for shows she wanted to see when she was in the "city" NYC. My sister would love to help you and she has much more info. about the Heck family than I do. Please let me know about John Chatfield if he is a relative of yours or not.

An honored citizen of Biggs who has been able to serve his community in the double capacity of merchant and public officer, providing one of the best general merchandise stores in the state and giving the town the benefit of his experience, his ability and his connections in the commercial and the political world, is Charles Edwin Chatfield, senior member of Chatfield and Smith, a firm doing business in the first story of the Odd Fellows’ Building, at the northwest corner of B and Second Streets. He was born at Portland, Ore., January 3, 1866, the son of R. E. Chatfield, who was a native of England and came to America as a young man.

C. E. Chatfield was a mere boy of ten when he came to Biggs, arriving here with his mother, who was then a widow and known as Mrs. Anna R. Chatfield. He has one brother, Walter Chatfield, a clerk in an automobile concern at San Francisco. The mother resides in Chico at the home of his half-sister. After attending the public schools at Sacramento, Virginia City and Carson City, Nev., and at Biggs, C. E. Chatfield began to work, at the age of fifteen, for the general merchandise store of S. Davidson, and two years later went to D. L. Butler and Company, successors to the late G. K. Smith, the pioneer merchant and banker of Biggs. Butler and Company, however, failed, about two years after young Chatfield entered their employ, and were succeeded by Griffith and Stose, with whom our subject continued for ten year until they, also, failed. Then, with Walter M. Smith, son of the late G. K. Smith, and a former Biggs boy, he succeeded to the business, and the firm has today the only general store in the city of Biggs.

Some years ago Chatfield and Smith bought out the stock of the Perkins and Wise Company at Oroville, ran the business a short time and sold it again. (This merchandise company was the successor to the George C. Perkins Pioneer Store at Oroville, founded by no less a person that the former Governor of the state who was later USA Senator.) Mr. Chatfield gives his entire attention to the business, his partner, Mr. Smith, living at Oroville and having other business interests.

In January, 1891, Mr. Chatfield was married to Miss Anna R. Brown, a sister of Assemblyman Brown, of Gridley, and a daughter of the late Capt. P. G. Brown, the stockman, and Mary E. Brown, both of whom are deceased and who were well-known in Biggs. Before her marriage Miss Brown was a teacher. They have three children: Rey Edwin, Vera M. and Ruth B. The first-named is a graduate of the University of California, class of ’14. He works in a store and farms rice successfully, while Vera and Ruth are both students at the State University.

C. E. Chatfield is a director in the Moran Company, a meat-packing institution of San Francisco, and he owns a sixty-acre ranch east of the town. In 1901, he built a residence in Biggs and still has his home there. He helped to build the Colonia Hotel, which was put up by the cooperation of the business men of Biggs after the fire. He is a Mason and a member of the Blue Lodge at Biggs and the Knights Templar of Oroville; and he also belongs to the Foresters at Biggs. He is now a member of the city board of trustees, takes an active interest in public welfare, and has a firm grasp on the business details of the city government.

Charles Erwin “Chipper” Chatfield, 96, of Sundance, Wyoming died peacefully early Friday morning, October 25, at Belle Estate Senior Living in Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
Chipper was born on Houston Creek west of Sundance on December 5, 1922, to E.B. and Berenice (Belshe) Chatfield. He grew up on the Chatfield Ranch and lived his entire life there. He graduated from Sundance High School (Old Stoney) in 1940, where he played football for the Bulldogs and belonged to FFA.
Chipper married Margery Graham in Hardin, Montana, on August 16, 1943. He and Margery had three children: Eva, Eddie, and Nancy. Chipper and Margie spent their lives, 66 years, working the ranch raising Hereford cattle and Ramboulet sheep. Chipper loved his horses and later in life had a small team, Ole and Lars, which he purchased from the Amish in Minnesota. He loved taking them to parades, pumpkin festivals, weddings, and any place people wanted a ride in his wagon.
Chipper was a member of Sundance Masonic Lodge #9, Scottish Rite, and Inyan Kara and Kalif Shrine. He served on the ASCS Board for many years. He was also an active Farm Bureau member, 4-H leader and school board member. On September 25, 2016, he was inducted into the Wyoming Cowboy Hall of Fame and was very proud of the belt buckle he received from his family.
Chipper is survived by his children Eva (Elvin) Rush, Eddie (Laurie Schell) all of Sundance and Nancy (John) Thorn of Lakeville, Minnesota; grandchildren Marsha (Rob) Connour, Dane (Trisha) Willey, Jaci (Eric) Wright, Jana (Brandon) Selk, Todd (Jenny) Chatfield, Tate (Jenny) Chatfield, Trodee (Brian) Jore, and Travis (Trina) Thorn; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren with another on the way.
Chipper was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margery; his sister, Elvera Morris; his brother, Edward (Fritz); and granddaughter, Lisa Gibbs, and great-granddaughter, Jaidyn Gibbs.
Memorial services will be held in Sundance, Wyoming at the Crook County SD#1 Central Office Gym on Friday, November 1, at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Lunch will be served immediately after at the Central Office Gym. A memorial has been established to the Sundance Church of Christ Building Fund.

SENSATIONAL ARREST

AUCKLAND, 14th November 1913. A sensational arrest took place near the Hospital this afternoon, when a youth, Charles George Chatfield, was arrested on a charge of attempting to discharge a loaded revolver at a special constable, Cecil Lynch. He was wearing a special constable's badge. A party of "specials" were going over the Grafton-road bridge, when they saw Chatfield. Two constables approached the man and enquired where he had got the badge. He replied that it was his special constable badge. Not feeling satisfied, Lynch informed Chatfield he would have to go to the Domain camp to be identified. Chatfield attempted to run away, but one of the "specials" caught him by the coat and placed his arms round him. When the constable did this he saw Chatfield raise his right hand, and he felt something touching the side of his head. Thinking it was a baton the "special" overthrew the accused and held him down on the ground.

"Whilst I did this," said the special constable later, "I saw some of the other constables relieve the accused of a revolver which he held in his right hand."

From accounts given by other constables, it seems that Chatfield had the weapon - a fully loaded one - pointed at Lynch. Chatfield then placed his hand in one of his side coat pockets. His hand was removed from the pocket, from which Lynch abstracted another loaded revolver of larger calibre than the first one.

Chatfield then submitted quietly and was taken to the Domain camp. On the way there he handed over a number of loose cartridges to Special Constable Lynch. Afterwards he was removed to the city police station, where he was charged with attempting to discharge a revolver at one Cecil Lynch. Accused is said to be only 18 years of age, and is described as a horsehair worker.
