JOHN CLARK DIED PEACEFULLY Apr. 7, 1991, in his hometown of Binghamton, N.Y., after two operations on his ulcerated stomach. A civic leader, he will be missed for his support of many worthy causes as well as for his business activities.

John prepared at Hotchkiss School. At Princeton he roomed with Craig Smyth and Chuck Stevens, joined Charter Club, and graduated with honors in history, an interest which he pursued throughout his life, encompassing both local and Civil War history.

After graduation he joined the family business, toiletry and pharmaceutical maker ClarkCleveland Inc., and rose to the presidency. He was also involved in land development, as well as in the Boys Club, the Girls Club, United Fund, the Interracial Assn., Friends of the Library, the local historical society, and withal read a book nearly every day. He was a talented oil painter - all this without neglecting his family, to whom he was most devoted.

John is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Frances Stone; his daughter, Aubrey Clark; his son, John C, 111 '65; eight grandchildren, three nieces, and two nephews. They have our heartfelt sympathy.

JACKSONVILLE - Virginia Ann Merritt of Jacksonville, FL passed away June 23, 2016.
She was born to Barney and Verna Clark on May 25, 1933 in Ashland, KY.
Employed by the Postal Inspector Service, she retired after many years of loyal service. Virginia finally met the love of her life, Herbert Hadley Merritt, and was married in 1966.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hadley and her daughter Kim Chatfield Rhoades.
Virginia is survived by her daughter Judith Ann Merritt Smith (Robert) of St. George, UT, son and caregiver Herbert Hadley Merritt, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, son Charles Chatfield (Janet) of Ashland, KY, son Robert Chatfield, son-in-law Ronald Rhoades (Kim) and grandson Christopher Rudy Rhoades (Kaylia) of Lexington, KY, granddaughter Courtney Chatfield-Joyce (Nicholas) and only beloved great grandson Micah Joyce of Ashland, KY.
Virginia will be laid to rest with her husband at Jacksonville National Cemetery.

Obituary
Nevada City native Wendall Henry Clark, 65, died Thursday at a Grass Valley medical facility.
Mr. Clark was born Dec 16, 1924, to the late Henry and Marguerite (Chatfield) Clark.
Mr. Clark was raised locally and graduated in 1943 from Nevada City High School.
He served in World War II as a shipfitter 2nd class for the U.S. Navy Reserve in the South Pacific area. In 1946, he began employment at the Miners Foundry for four years.
In 1950, Mr. Clark built and operated the Rock Creek Sawmill until 1963. He then became superintendent of the Bear River Sawmill in Grass Valley for seven years.
In 1975, he opened and operated Idaho-Maryland Fabrication Service until his death.
Mr. Clark was a past president of the Nevada City Lions, a member of the Nevada City Elks and the Nevada City Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Rose; daughter Wendy Reuter of Grass Valley, son David of Nevada City; brothers Ellis of Burlingame and Jack of Grass Valley, and one granddaughter.
Burial will be at Sierra Memorial Lawn, in Nevada City.
