Bernard John (BJ) Brosnahan was born 30th October 1907 and grew up in Kaiti, Gisborne. Young Bernard was educated by his eldest sister Nell through the school on the farm. Bernard in his late teens went shepherding on Murphy's Station (sheep and cattle) and worked on other well known stations on the Coast and Gisborne area. BJ had a natural affinity for farm dogs and had many successful Dog Trial dogs. BJ played polo for Gisborne B team. He was a fine horseman and won prizes for jumping his horses at the local annual shows.

BJ became an expert at handling stock and on many occasions drove mobs of cattle all the way from Gisborne for sale in the Waikato. In some areas he travelled along the coastal beaches, sleeping under the stars, his saddle for a headrest and his well-trained dogs guarding the mob from straying.

The family farm at 'Wainui' was situated on the route from Opotiki to Whakatane, overlooking the Ohiwa Harbour. It was previously owned by Mr. White and his sister Miss White. BJ had often looked up at the Wainui Farm and thought to himself "that is a farm I would like to own, it has the hills and the flats, facing the sun". Many years later BJ was able to buy this farm which has become the home of Resurgam Angus.

John Brosnahan in the Cyclopedia [could be father]

Interestingly, a John Brosnahan appears in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand, which I posted about yesterday. Could this be my John?

Brosnahan, John, Farmer, Levels. Mr. Brosnahan was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in 1862 by the ship “Exchange.” He engaged in various pursuits until 1865, when he became a farmer at the Levels, where he acquired 530 acres. Mr. Brosnahan is married and has twelve children.

Twelve children. Crikey! I have my work cut out trying to find all that lot.

The people featured in the Cyclopedia paid for the privilege of having an entry included – and provided the information to the compilers, so one assumes that the biographical data would be reasonably accurate.

My John Brosnahan did arrive in New Zealand in 1862, but the ship given here is “Exchange”, whereas he sailed on the “Echunga”. I can’t find any record of a ship called the “Exchange” sailing to New Zealand during this time, so I suspect it is an error made by the compiler, or perhaps faulty memory on John’s part? Or a different John?

Yet another of the fast diminishing numbers of early settlers has passed away in the person of Mrs Brosnahan, relict of the late Mr James Brosnahan, whose death (says the Temuka Leader) at the age of 86 is announced. The deceased lady was a resident of the district for the past 36 years, having settled here on her arrival from the County of Kerry, and was well known and highly respected. During the last 12 months her once familiar figure has not been seen about as frequently as of yore, owing to illness. The late Mrs Brosnahan was the mother of Mr John Brosnahan, of Arowhenua. Mrs M. Gaffaney and Miss Brosnahan (Temuka), Mrs G Gaffaney (Dunedin), and Mrs Bryant (Christchurch). She leaves altogether one son, four daughters, 41 grand-children, and 20 great grandchildren. Previous to her illness she was hale and hearty, and was often to be seen walking to or from Mr Brosnahan's to her own house in Temuka preferring to do so than drive.

BROSSART, Floyd F. 46 years, who had spent his entire life in Muscatine county, died at Bellevue hospital today. The son of August and Elizabeth Reeves Brossart, he was born in Muscatine county Nov. 11 1904 and married Alice Chatfield here on Jan. 4, 1927. Later he married Edna White at Iowa City on June 23, 1947.
He was engaged in farming and was formerly employed by the McKee Feed & Grain Company.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edna Brossart; a son, Marlin Brossart and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Brossart, all of Muscatine, also two sisters, Mrs. Vernon Halling of Muscatine and Mrs. Harold Knoth of Davenport. His first wife and one brother preceded him in death.
Services will be at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home on Sunday. The Rev. August Aden of Ziegler Memorial Lutheran church of New Era will be in charge.

His hobbies included genealogy, classical music, attending opera, computers and world travel.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; a son, Randy and his wife, Shawna, of Valley Center, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Kenny, Jennifer and Robby Brossart.
