Dec 24, 1891, Kankakee Gazette, Kankakaee Co., Illinois:
KILLED BY A FALL: Farmer Charles Chatfield of Salina precipitated from a Windmill. Charles Chatfield of Salina, brother of Wm. S. Chatfield of this city, was killed at his neighbor Harry Strawson's place on Sunday evening by falling from a windmill. His turkeys had acquired the habit of leaving home and roosting upon Strawson's windmill. Mr. Chatfield decided to catch them and sell them off. With this purpose in view he came to Strawson's and the latter went across the road with him to hold the lantern while he climbed the windmill ladder. Mr. Chatfield made two trips to the top and was making the third when a rung of the ladder broke and he fell a distance of 25 feet striking upon some large stones. He was picked up unconscious with a leg broken in several places and died on the following day. The Chatfield family were among the early settlers in Salina. The senior Chatfield is dead and three of the brothers have emigrated to Colorado. Charles was the only one left on the farm. The place where he was injured was the old homestead, recently sold to young Strawson, where he was raised from boyhood and the wind mill was the one he helped to build and with which he was perfectly familiar. He leaves a family.

During the funeral procession the only thing his wife had to say was, "Serves the drunken old fool right." Unwilling to pardon him for gambling away the family fortune some thirty years before, she had him buried in the non-Catholic section of the cemetery (away from the family plots) at the back corner of the cemetery tool shed.

In July of 2003 my brother Gordon Clemens and I bought our grandfather a headstone. There was room on the plaque, so we added "Son of Isaac W. Chatfield" as a nice touch. We knew full well that adding "Beloved Husband of Nellie" would have our grandmother roll over in her grave, but we thought it a fine idea.

In Aug of 1986—while watching a televised baseball game—Charley jumped up in the middle of a play and had a heart attack. At the age of ninety, he died where we would all like to end up—in Paradise.

Chatfield was born Nov 18, 1895, In Fruita, Colo., to Charles and Nellie Chatfield. He was educated in Colorado and Wyoming and graduated from high school in Montana. He came to Chico in 1913.

He entered the Army in 1916 and fought in the Mexican American War and in World War I. He came home in 1919.

======================
Charley & Velma traveled the west visiting America's dams, herculean monuments to this country's ingenuity and hubris, Velma instructing Charley how to use the camera ("push the red button, Charley, push the red button…"), Charley taking reel after reel of color 8-millimeter movies of the panoramic views, all with no people in them. At seventeen, Charley worked on the Cody Dam in Wyoming; along with the weather, dams were his lifelong interest. The Chatfield Dam on the South Platte River in Colorado is named after his grandfather, I.W. Chatfield.

He belonged to camera club where members viewed one another's home movies and he had over a hundred reels of black and white film of dams throughout the USA—and one reel of the family.

The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : Saturday 31 December 1887)
PLUCKY BRITISH SOLDIER.-The Pioneer of recent date says:-"The 1st Battalion King's Own (Yorkshire) Light Infantry (late 51st), under the command of Lieutenant Colonel C. K. Chatfield, arrived at Mandalay from the Upper Burma frontier on the 31st October, in the Indian Marine steamer Sir Frederick Peel, en-route to England. A short time after their arrival a lance-corporal of the battalion, named Upton, fell overboard: the colonel, who was standing with his officers on deck at the time, seeing the man fall over, ran to the bridge and jumped overboard in his uniform after him. The corporal, who was unable to swim, rose only once to the surface, and sank just before the Colonel could reach him. He was never seen again. The Irrawaddy runs with dangerous force past Mandalay, and has proved fatal to many of our gallant soldiers. Men who fall in appear to rise only once, and then disappear in the most extraordinary manner. A few months ago a sergeant of this battalion was at Mandalay, on his way up to the frontier, and fell overboard from a steamer almost exactly in the same place, and was drowned. This N.C.O. could swim, but he was only seen to rise once, and was then swept away by the current and never seen again till his body was found some 50 miles below Mandalay. Colonel Chatfield's right hand was partly disabled was bandaged at the time he jumped over board. He swam some distance down the river in hopes of the unfortunate corporal coming to the surface again, but no trace of him was seen, though hundreds of eager eyes were watching from the decks of the steamer. Two men of a company of the battalion which had disembarked, Private Mills and he Staton, both fine swimmers, seeing the excitement on board and someone in the water, pluckily went into the stream and swam out towards the steamer, and afterwards followed their Colonel down the river. All three succeeded afterwards in reaching the shore without much difficulty."

I have been looking at the chatfield family tree at http://chatfield.familytreeguide.com/getperson.php?personID=I16347&tree=T1

You have an some inaccurate information under Charles Morgan Chatfield. b Arundel 1857.
This man is my great grandfather, he married Annie Richardson on the 27 Aug 1894 at Midhurst registry office. I have a copy of this certificate. The inaccuracy is your listing of his children, the first three children you list are NOT Charles and Annies children. Charles and Annies children were:
(Now corrected CJC)
1. Caroline (Carrie) Chatfield b 27 July 1895 in Pulborough m Archibald Smith 12 April 1923 St Marys Pulborough d 16 Feb 1963, buried St Marys Pulborough. One child who died 30 Dec 2012 no further descendents.
2. Annie May Chatfield b 24 Jan 1898 died age 5, 20 Mar 1903 in Broomers Hill, Pulborough, from Diptheria, which granny always said was caught from eating dirty ice from a pond. buried St Marys Pulborough 25 March 1903.
3. Elsie Clara Chatfield ( as you correctly list - my lovely granny who did indeed marry Arthur Kenrick (Ken) Campbell on 18th June 1932 at St Marys Pulborough. 3 children, including my mum, all still alive
4. Charles Ralph Chatfield b 10 Feb 1906 Codmore Hill (near pulborough) married Edith Lucy Short 11 Jan 1930 St Marys Pulborough. died March 1955 Southlands Hospital Shoreham. 3 children all still alive, one living in France, one in Brazil and the third in Pulborough Sussex.

Charles Morgan Chatfield died 31 August 1909 in White Cottage Codmore Hill Pulborough from a stroke I have a death certificate, and there was a coroners inquest. Buried 4 September 1909 at St Marys Pulborough. As you can see Annie was left with a young family to bring up on her own. For some reason she fell out with her husbands family and left the White Cottage under duress but not before she had copied down all the names and birth dates in William Henry Chatfields family bible, I suppose it was some sort of proof of descendancy for her children? I have those details too.
Annie Chatfield died 1 Dec 1958 and is buried in grave number SW0940 at St Marys Pulborough.

Incidentally,
The first three children you list are all children of Charles Morgan Chatfield's youger brother Thomas (Tom) James (known in the family as Jim) Chatfield and Emma Jane Ellis m 1895. Jim died 1 Oct 1943 in Pyrford Woking Surrey. Jim was a blacksmith.

This couple also had an older child Edward William Chatfield b 1898 in Milford Surrey
Then Ethel Kate b Hartington Sussex 1899 Leonard James Ellis Chatfield b Hartington 1901and Mabel Jane b 1903 Hartington. Haven't got exact dates for these sorry.

I hope you have enough proof here and will be able to update the inaccuracies.
