NOTES
There is a Thomas Chatfield baptised 23 June 1706 in Balcombe to Thomas Chatfield and Jane Gray who were married on 2 June 1703 in Balcombe. Jane would have been too old to have had Charles in 1747. However, their son Thomas seems much more likely as the father of Charles.

The Sydney Morning Herald, NSW : Thursday 28 October 1897
Mr Charles Chatfield, of Hereford-street, Stockton, who for a period of over 30 years occupied the position of manager of the Stockton Patent Slip, was found dead in a bedroom at his residence yesterday (27 Oct 1897). The deceased was a prominent Mason, and was connected with a number of other institutions. In leaving London in 1857 he secured a passage by the ill fated Dunbar, but missed the vessel by a few minutes, and came on by the following ship, to learn that, with the exception of one man, the whole of the passengers of the Dunbar had perished. The brother of the deceased, Captain Henry Chatfield, was drowned in the memorable wreck of the Cawarra ín Newcastle Harbour.

=====
Charles Chatfield was born in Deptford, Kent in the year 1826, his father being in Government service and employ of Messrs Green and Wigram of Blackwall, the eminent ship owners and builders. At the age of 12 his parents died and under the guardianship of his uncle Mr. Chatfield was placed with Messrs Bowman and Droumond, ship builders and dry dock owners in Blyth in the north of England to learn the trade of shipwrighting. After three years and before his apprenticeship was finished, he was entrusted with the construction of vessels at the establishment. During the next 9 years he designed some of the fastest sailers in the transport service in the time of the Russian War of 1856. He decided to come to Australia in 1857 and applied for passage on the ill fated vessel Dunbar. which was wrecked at Sydney Heads. Through a misunderstanding, he missed his passage, arrived in September in a later vessel, The Dragoon with his wife, Ann Isabella and son Ambrose. He worked in Sydney, Tweed River, Grafton etc before coming to Newcastle to superintend the erection of the Government coal staith after previous contractors had failed in the work where he was employed for 2 years. In 1869 he superintended the upgrade of the Stockton patent slip. He was connected with the hospital, school of arts and church committees

Another Divorce. — A complaint was filed yesterday in the District Court by Maria Chatfield, praying for a divorce from her husband, Charles Chatfield. The complaint sets forth that the said party were married in Illinois in 1850, and immediately afterward emigrated to this State, where they lived together as man and wife until about the 17th of October, when the defendant abandoned her, and since which time she has been compelled to support herself. The parties reside in this city.

Divorce Suit.— ln the case of Maria Chatfield vs. Charles Chatfield, which was a suit for divorce on the ground of adultery, charged to have been commited by the defendant May 7th, a decree was entered in the Sixth District Court dismissing the bill on the ground of collusion between the parties. The plaintitf afterwards moved for an order setting aside the finding and decree, and for a new trial, on the ground that the decision was against law and evidence. The District Court, after reviewing the facts in the case, comes to the conclusion that the plaintiff was cognizant of the alleged crime and assented thereto, and that the collusion between the parties was so apparent that the motion for a new trial must be annulled. An order was directed to be entered accordingly.
