Claudia, lowering her long lashes upon meeting Bobby, was smitten, and he with she. They spent a lot of time together; didn’t really date, they mostly rode around in the back seat of his friend’s car, Claudia holding hands and necking with Bobby, while on the radio the The Great Pretender crooned, “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You”. Bobby was a blonde baby-faced southern boy, polite and charming. He was also four years older and more experienced. He was on liberty in the Navy, stationed in nearby Moffett Field, had enlisted at sixteen but said he was eighteen so he could get in. Bobby was fun and she liked how he sounded, but Claudia didn’t speak Southern, so couldn’t understand half of what he said. He said he loved her. He said he wanted to marry her. He said if she loved him... It didn’t take long, and when Claudia told Betty that she had sex with him knowing that Betty would give her the right advice, Betty, who at fifteen knew everything, said, “Oh great—now you have to marry him.” Spouse: Living.
