A jackknife he found in the South Dakota Badlands is on display in Smithsonian Institution: it bears the date "1732" and the initials "RK". Among other ranches where Jumbo worked are the George Davis place and the Williams place on Raven Creek.

When he started grade school (~1915), he told everybody his name was "Jack." He didn't care much for the name Maurice.... While attending high school he stayed at grandparents Chatfield's home and rode horse named "Little Grey." According to history compiled by Betty Lou Camblin Woods in 1990, "Jack was a Keeline cowboy who homesteaded there (in Lead, Lawrence, SD) then later sold the property to the Keeline Ranch. A local schoolteacher, Mary Schmidt, became his wife. They had three girls, all of whom worked at the Union State Bank. Jack attended high school at Sundance, Crook, WY, but did not graduate.

She was married to Thomas A. Ballew and had a very large family.
