For some years after coming west, he devoted the greater portion of his time to his trade,but as age advanced, he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He was a man of considerable ability and in his younger days taught school. Religiously he was a Universalist. He lived to be over seventy-six years of age, 1798-1873. His wife died in 1861 at the age of fifty-six years.

George Washington was well educated and a man of considerable means for those times. He was a school teacher. He had been bound out for seven years and had learned the carpenter trade, also the joiner and millwork trade.

Description of Geo. W. Dennis from an old tintype picture: "He was of medium height, wore side burns, was wearing a long dress coat, had a rather heavy nose, somewhat flat on the end, looked to be a sober, ill-tempered man and in fact, had the map of Ireland on his face. He looked very genteel, like an Irish Statesman.

Obituary

Grace C. Dennis, 84, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 22, 1965 at the Sycamore Municipal Hospital.
She was born Jan. 13, 1881 in Sycamore, the daughter of Gurdon H. and Edith Chatfield Dennis. She attended the local schools and despite a hearing handicap she endeared herself to her many friends nieces and nephews. Her whole purpose in life was doing for others.
Miss Dennis resided with her mother in DeKalb until her death when she moved to her sister's home at Electric Park Corners. She was a member of the DeKalb Methodist Church and the Home Bureau for many years.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle T. Lundberg of DeKalb and Mrs. John (Gertrude) Groves Lowe of Electric Park Corners.
Also surviving are eight nieces and nephews, Mrs. Margaret Tomlinson, Robert Dennis, Mrs. Audrey Soli, Mrs. Marjorie Mohrman and several great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Coultrip Funeral Home with Rev. Asbjorn Smedstad of the Methodist Church of DeKalb officiating.

Gurdon H. Dennis, a well known farmer, who was one of ten children who removed with their parents from Alleghany county, N.Y., and located in Mayfield township, this county, in 1844, died at his home on the corner by Electric park, a mile and a half southwest of Sycamore, early on last Sunday morning after an illness of a few weeks of pneumonia and a complication of diseases.

His father George W. Dennis bought 40 acres in Mayfield, erected a primitive log house and later added this his farm and improved it. He devoted much of his time to his trade, that of a carpenter.

The son Gurdon H. was the fifth in the order of birth of the ten children. He was 12 years old when he arrived with his parents in Mayfield, and 14 when he left the parental roof to hew out his own destiny. After working out for three years, and when he was but 17 years old, he bought a farm of eighty acres of wild prairie, which he at once began to cultivate, and which he paid for in two years.

When he was 23 years of age, on August 29, 1855, he was married to Miss Louise Osterhout. By this union six children were born: Fremont A., Nettie A., Mary E., Carrie B., Mina L., who died in 1872; Amos H., and May , who died in 1893.

Mr. Dennis resided on the farm until 1880, when he sold it and removed to North sycamore and two years later to Poweshiek county, Iowa, where he bought a farm of 255 acres, where he resided until 1886 when he exchanged it for the farm on which he died which consists of 174 acres.

The second marriage of Mr. Dennis was solemnized on March 16, 1880, when he married Miss Edith Chatfield, daughter of Robert Chatfield. By this union three children were born: Grace C., Robert G., and Myrtle T.

Mr. Dennis was a good citizen, a man of character and good common sense, and was well known throughout this part of the county.

The funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The remains were interred in Elmwood cemetery.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the Kebil Funeral Home for Janet Dennis, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Dennis of Sycamore. Janet was born at the local municipal hospital early Saturday morning and passed away a few hours later. The Rev. H. L. Michael of the Federated church officiated and interment was held in the Elmwood cemetery.
There are two other children, Bobby and Donna, who share with their parents, the loss of their little sister. Mrs. Dennis is the former Grace Clark of DeKalb.

Death Takes Robert Dennis

Robert Gurdon Dennis, 75, prominently known and honored resident of this community, passed away early Saturday morning at the local hospital, following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Dennis was a former Sycamore businessman, having owned and operated a feed and grain store in the location where Taylor-Nash Sales is now located. He later farmed for 22 years northwest of DeKalb, and upon retiring from farming in 1932 he became a feed salesman, and was still engaged in that field of work when stricken with his last illness.
He was born April 15, 1883 in Ottawa, the son of Gurden and Edith Chatfield Dennis. At the age of two years he moved with his parents to the rural area of Electric park Corners, growing to mature years there. He attended the Coltonville and Sycamore Schools.
On August 26, 1903, he was married in Sycamore to Claire Maude Austin. Their early married years were lived here, when Mr. Dennis operated his feed business, later moving to the rural area of DeKalb, where they farmed for 22 years, then resided in DeKalb for one years, and in 1932 returned to Sycamore, where the home has since been made.
Possessed of the finest traits of character, Mr. Dennis was highly respected by all who knew him. He was civic minded and always interested in the better things in life. He loved his home and family and was active in Church work for many years. During his residence in the DeKalb area he was a member of the Congregational Church in that city, and since coming to Sycamore he has been a faithful member of the Federated Church, having served as deacon and usher for several years.
He was a member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and of the Royal Arcanum Lodge, having received his 50 year pin. He had also served as treasurer of the Northwest Shipping Association. Mr. Dennis was an ardent lover of flowers and cultivated rare species of gladioli blooms, also choice varieties of roses. He was also a very interested member of the Sycamore Garden Club.
The Golden Wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis, which was celebrated five years ago, was a beautiful and memorable occasion.
Left to mourn his demise are his devoted wife and three devoted children, Margaret Dennis Tomlinson of Boston, Mass., Robert Austin Dennis of Sycamore and Audrey Dennis Soli of Genoa; also five grandchildren, Dean Tomlinson and Margaret Ann Tomlinson Morrow, both of Boston, Mass., Robert James Dennis and Donna Carolyn Dennis, both of Sycamore, and Clairann Soli of Genoa; two great-grandchildren, Dean Tomlinson, Jr., and Deborah Ann Morrow of Boston, Mass.; and three sister, Miss Grace Dennis of Sycamore, Mrs. C. W. (Myrtle) Lundberg of DeKalb and Mrs. George (Gertrude) Groves of rural DeKalb; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and a grandchild, Janet Dennis, predeceased him.
