4 Tidy Street, Brighton
Although Robert Frampton may have been living in the house he built, Robert Morling was evidently intending to let the property. He also owned other properties. When he died he left number 4 Tidy Street to his daughter Ann Butler. On the 16th April 1850 Ann and James Butler, her husband, took out a loan of £160 from Miss Stella Williams using the title of number 4 as a guarantee. On the 2nd April 1853 Stella Williams put the property up for auction, selling it to Edward Chatfield and Sidney McWhinney for £220. In order to buy the property Edward Chatfield took out a mortgage for £197 from the Borough of Brighton Building Society, which he repaid in 1857. Edward Chatfield was also an absentee landlord, (his Will shows him living at 16 Pelham Street) and he continued to use the property as collateral for loans. He borrowed £191.15/- from the Brighton Benefit Building Society in 1858 and £409 in 1872 from the Albert Benefit Building Society. These loans were all paid off in turn and when he died on the 13th Sep 1893 the property was left to his son Ebenezer Chatfield. On the 20th March 1894 Ebenezer sold number 4 to William J Overall.

29 July 1893 Brighton Herald
"Mr Edward Chatfield, the well-known confectioner, whose business premises have existed successfully in Bond Street, Brighton for nearly half-a-century, can claim to be one of the oldest tradesmen within the borough. His ancestors for upwards of three hundred years were residents of the picturesque parish of Ardingly. Mr Chatfield was born on June 5th, 1812 in Ardingly Street, half a mile from Hapstead Green. The humble tenement has succumbed to time, and on the spot exists a latter day villa. The pretty hamlet, too, has grown and the long absent country bumpkin would scarcely recognise the locality, so fast has the march of improvement spread. Year after year has Mr Chatfield, though quite a veteran, visited the scenes of his boyhood, for the love for the home of his parents has been almost of a sacred character. One of the potent attractions that enlisted his sympathy has, however, passed to the great majority, and Ardingly has been deprived quite recently of its oldest resident as well as of the very last of the race that bore the cognomen of Chatfield. She died at the fine old age of ninety-six years. She was a guest at the Jubilee of George III as well as present at the village festivities that celebrated the fiftieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria. The names of the Chatfields of Ardingly are preserved in the Parochial registers from 1558. Few Sussex men possess a better record than does Mr Edward Chatfield. How bright and interesting appears his career. The spirit of enterprise that inspired the hard-working youngster to leave his village associates developed itself to win the struggle of independence, and early in 1829 he came to Brighton where he quickly found employment in one of the prominent thoroughfares, where his industry soon obtained recognition.

Having formed endearing social ties, Mr Chatfield began business on his own account at the lower corner of Pimlico (now Tichborne Street), in Church Street, and here it was that the prestige of Chatfield's homemade bread grew apace. The success of his venture induced Mr Chatfield to remove to Bond Street, in the shop now occupied by Mr Cousins. It was whilst he resided here that he had the misfortune to be deprived of his mother and sister, by a fatal railway accident which occurred in the Great Exhibition year (6 June 1851) on the line between Brighton and Lewes. The victims of the calamity were interred in the Hanover chapel Ground, where also repose the remains of Mr Chatfield's father. Some years ago Mr Chatfield acquired more extensive premises on the west side of Bond Street, where steadily the confectionery connection has grown and prospered. Of Mr Chatfield's family of eight, children, three sons and two daughters survive.

The concern in Bond Street is now under the careful and experienced guidance of Mr Chatfield's son, who also has an establishment in Church Street, nearly opposite the spot where his parents commenced their business career. Chatfield pere, though over four-score years of age, retains his vitality wonderfully well. His retentive memory recalls many pleasing features of his eighteen years' service on the Board of Guardians, as well as of various episodes in connection with public festivals. Be has been an industrious promoter of Friendly and Building Societies, and, as an earnest worker, sincere, industrious and benevolent, it is not too much to say that he has won widespread esteem, more particularly among the older generations of Brightonians who knew him in his prime. Still hale and hearty, he can often be met in the thoroughfares northwards of the Pavilion, for he even now attends to his business with all the interest and not a little of the activity of those younger days of half a century ago."

Census 1881: Chatfield, Edward, born abt 1815 in Oxted, Surrey. Now living in Farnborough, Hants.

There is a newpaper article stating he died at Stirling Villas, Alexandra Road, Farnborough, Hampshire.
"Death OF MR. E. CHATFIELD.
HIS PART IN FARNBOROUGH.
Farnborough sustains a loss in the death of Mr. Edward Chatfield, which occurred at his residence, Stirling Villas, Alexandra Road, on Wednesday.
Mr. Chatfield, who was in his eighty-fifth year, had lived at Farnborough for over thirty years and took part in its development. His interest in Church work there was very keen. He was mainly instrumental in the building of St.
Mark's Church in 1881, and had been identified with it ever since, having been a churchwarden and a very large donor to the church funds. It was he who chose the site for the erection of the edifice, and only last year he put in the large west window and another window to the memory of his late wife and sister-in-law. The lectern, too, was a gift of his, and speaking generally he had been a most liberal subscriber towards the maintenance of the church and schools ever since their erection. Everything indeed, affecting the welfare of the parish found in him a warm supporter. It was in 1863 that Mr. Chatfield actually came to Farnborough, his object then being to buy land and develop the district for residential purposes on behalf of a public company. At the time the land was practically covered with heather and brambles Eastbourne was then being developed, and Mr. Curry, the architect of the company on behalf of which Mr. Chatfield was acting. had laid out the roads there. He came to Farnborough and went over the land with Mr. Chatfield, and it was decided that the roads should be laid out similarly to those at the south coast watering place. Stirling Villas, in one of which Mr. Chatfield was residing at the time of his death, were built by the company, and the deceased gentleman himself built Croxted House. When the roads were laid out they were named by Mr. Chatfield from personages or events connected with them.

Alexandra road is an example of this. This was planted with an avenue of beech, lime, and chestnut trees, and named it after her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, who drove along it on the occasion of her visit to the camp. In 1874 the company was would up and the land sold, Mr. Chatfield being appointed the liquidator of the estate, which proved sufficient to pay all the shareholders.

Up to a month ago Mr. Chatfield was in the habit of travelling up to London once or a week, he being chairman of the British Mutual Bank and a director of the Accident Insurance Company, St. Swithin's-lane. His illness really commenced about three years ago, when he had a stroke of paralysis, which, although he may be said to have been ailing ever since did not impair his faculties. Since then he has had another stroke, but had been confined to his bed for less than a week before his demise. He was a widower. his wife having died about two years and four months ago. There was only one child of the marriage - a son, who died over forty years ago at the age of ten years. Mr. Chatfield was of course well known and equally well respected. His loss will be much felt at Farnborough. The funeral takes place on Monday at Highgate Cemetery, where Mr. Chatfield's wife and son already be buried. Before the remains are taken to London the first part of the burial service will be read at St Mark’s Church, Farnborough, at 10.30a.m.

Aldershot News, July 1st 1899"

Chatfield Close in Farnborough probably named after him.
