In his youth he had learned the wagon maker trade, but afterward followed farming in Oxford, New Haven, CT, until 1841 when he removed to New Haven and engaged in sash and blind manufacturing with Ira Atwater, on Water Street.
He was afterward engaged in house building as per census of 1850. For many years he was one of the leading builders of the city, and some of the finest buildings erected in his time are examples of his skill.
[QUERY THIS SENTENCE. Later he entered the office of his son Philo, II, at the firm of Chatfield & Grant, mason builders.] He was a member of College Street Church, and was an upright and honored citizen.
