William Murray - Husband and Father
Shortly after graduating from Yale in 1862, William married Isadora Hull of East River, CT. She was a lover of the outdoors, like her new husband. She worked as a teacher while William attended East Windsor Theological Seminary and also during his vicarage in New York City.

The couple prospered on William's $3000 annual salary and living in comfortable parsonage at the Meriden church. The couple's lifestyle improved even more at Park Street with a good salary and income from William's books, newspaper articles, and his own weekly newspaper The Golden Rule.

William bought his family farm and converted it into a stable for breeding race horses. At roughly the same time, he invested heavily in a carriage business that quickly failed. The members and leaders at Park Street strongly disapproved of Will's lifestyle and time spent away from church business. During this time, the couple discovered that Isadora could not have children, which bothered Will greatly.

William's departure from Park Street and the establishment of his independent church further eroded the couple's relationship. Isadora discovered interests of her own, most prominently an interest in medicine. Will's business ventures all failed and he lost the family farm and the bulk of their savings in the process. Following the collapse of the independent church in 1879, Will resigned the ministry the couple separated. Isadora went to New York then Vienna to study medicine, specifically surgery. She became the first American to be a licenced surgeon in Europe. Will began traveling around the states, England, and Europe, giving lectures on camping and the Adirondacks. The couple officially divorced in 1886.

NEW HAVEN, Conn., October 1. - The petitioner in a suit for divorce, soon to be brought in the superior court in this city, will be Isadora L. Murray, wife of the Rev. "Adirondack" Murray, who is at the present time a resident of Montreal, Canada. Mrs. Murray asks for an absolute decree of divorce on the grounds of desertion. The petition sets forth that she married William H.H. Murray August 8, 1862, and that he deserted her July 1, 1880. The Rev. Mr. Murray, it is understood, is perfectly willing his wife should take her decree without any opposition on his part. Mrs. Murray has practiced medicine in this city for about four years, and has built up quite an extensive and lucrative practice.

Calvin Kendal Mutchler

JACKSON, TN: Calvin Kendal Mutchler, 89, died Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at the home of his daughter, Beth Roby, in Jackson, Tennessee.

He was born in Oceola, Ohio, on January 25, 1926—the youngest son of Jesse Cleveland Mutchler and Bessie Dell (Cox) Mutchler. In spring of this year, Cal will join his wife, Peggy Mutchler, in the Tod Township Cemetery in Oceola. Family and friends will be invited to attend a memorial service at that time.

Calvin would say the most important event in his life was marrying Peggy on June 9, 1951. The couple shared a love and talent for music, and Cal's tenor voice was heard in church choirs and vocal groups in every town they called home.

Cal's marriage to Peggy endured for 61 years and included the births of six children, Sue Mutchler (Dennis Brown) of Littleton, CO, Beth Roby (Kevin Roby, d. 2000) of Jackson, TN, Jan Mutchler (Jeffrey Burr) of Duxbury, MA, Leigh Mutchler (Eric Junkin), of Knoxville, TN, Don Mutchler (Sheryl Chatfield) of Kent, Ohio, and Kathryn Mutchler-Lee (Monny Mutchler-Lee) of Collierville. Calvin also is survived by ten grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law and their wives, Richard Hopper (Karen) of Columbus, Ohio, and David Hopper (Sandy) of Fort Wayne, IN. In addition, Cal remained close to many nieces and nephews with whom he kept in touch via letter, email, and in-person whenever possible.

Calvin was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army's 42nd Infantry Rainbow Division in Germany and Austria from October 1944 to August 1946. He continued his service in the ArmyReserves until May 1982, when he retired with the rank of Colonel. After the war, Cal attended universities in Ohio and Minnesota, ultimately earning a PhD in Agricultural Engineering. He enjoyed a 56-year career as a researcher, research leader, and administrator at USDA agricultural research laboratories, during which he received both national and international recognition for his research on erosion and sedimentation processes. He retired in 1992 to spend many more years enjoying family, keeping fit through over 15 years of aquatic swimming, and "digging in the dirt" (as he called working in his yard in Oxford, Mississippi).
