Victim of Blood Poison
Old Soldier fights Last Battle
Passes Away After Brief Illness from Blood Poisoning
Many Years Service for Country

The venerable Marcus M. Chatfield Sr. died at his home in this city Tuesday morning at 10:00 after a short illness from diabetic blood poisoning. It was only last Thursday that a painful little sore was noticed on one of his fingers and this quickly developed into one of worst cases of blood poisoning. Doctors could do little for the sufferer and he grew rapidly worse until death came to his relief.

The funeral was held this morning from the Congregational church in this city, Rev. J.M. Sutherland, the pastor officiating. The remains were interred in Rose Hill cemetery. This funeral was somewhat of a military nature, the deceased having served his country during the civil war for nearly five years.

The deceased was born in Medina County, Ohio 69 years ago. When he was but sixteen years of age he removed to Minnesota and when the war of the Rebellion broke out he enlisted with the 1st Iowa Cavalry continuing with that regiment until February 1866.

He was in a number of hard engagements, one of the hardest being the battle of Prairie Grove. His operations were mainly in the west and the fighting was of the most arduous kind. He was never wounded in battle, though owing to his service for this country, he became impaired in health to such an extent that he was heavily pensioned by the government. He loved his country. He enjoyed nothing more in the later years of his life than getting down his saber and carbine from the wall and fondly caring for them. They lay on the table in the room where he died.

The deceased was a farmer all his life with the exception of the 5 years he was in the service of his country.

He lived for many years in Rock county Minnesota and about ten years ago he came with his children to this state and they filed on homestead claims in Chatfield Township, in southwestern Bottineau County. About two months ago Mr. and Mrs. Chatfield moved to Minot that they might take life easier and be with their children more.

Mr. Chatfield was united in marriage to Hellen Willson of Spring Valley, Minnesota in 1867 and to this union eleven children were born, eight of whole life as follows:
Guy C., Coy, Marcus M. and Mrs. T. C. Peterson of Minot, Mrs. J. R. Smith of Omemee, Mrs. Emil Seablom of McCullough, ND. Mrs. Henry Lawrence of Crosby and Miss Helen Chatfield, one of the nurses at the Northwestern hospital. The deceased is survived also by his wife, who will miss him more than words can tell.

Marcus M. Chatfield lived a good life. He fought a good fight. He reared a most excellent family, and while the members of the family, and the many friends mourn his departure they must receive much consolation in the thought that he was most useful to his country, that he lived a long and useful life. He was a man of great energy and active in his good deeds for others to the very end of his days.

The Independent sincerely regrets the loss of this excellent citizen and we wish to extend our sympathy to the bereaved members of the family.

Margaret CHATFIELD was born about 1566 in Rumboldswyke, Sussex West, England. She died on 17 March 1638 at the age of 72 in South Mundham, Pagham, Sussex West, England. Parents: Francis CHATFIELD and Anne PECKHAM.

Margaret CHATFIELD was born in 1610. She died after 1671 at the age of 61 in Sussex, England. She signed a will in 1675 in Sussex, England. Margaret Chatfield had another brother, John, who was born about 1612 and died bef 1702. This could have been the "uncle" of Henry Norris, meaning that no connection may exist to the Long Island Chatfield or Norris families. Without knowing which uncle was being referred to this is a leap.

Margaret Norris wrote her will in 1660 but died after 1671 and before 1675 when it was probated. Presumably the debt was not cleared prior to her death. Henry Norris was no longer living near Thomas Chatfield in 1671 or later. Thomas Chatfield remained on Long Island and Henry Norris left shortly after marrying in 1668. While contact with Henry would not be impossible, why would Thomas Chatfield not have paid off his debt prior to this? And if he did, why didn't Margaret change her will to reflect the payment of the debt? Of course if the debt were owed to Margaret by John Chatfield then it would be reasonable not to change the will. This would be especially true if Henry Norris, her son, was still in Sussex, as I assume to be the case. If he were in America there would be little likelihood that the debt would be paid, and certainly not 13 to 15 years after she wrote the will. If it had not been paid in 15 years, we may assume that it would not be paid....

The South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : Thursday 10 June 1869)
On Monday, the 7th inst., an inquest was held before Mr. R. M. Cole, J.P., Coroner, and a Jury of 14, of whom Mr. Mager was chosen foreman, about three miles north of Rhynie, to enquire into the death of Margaret Chatfield, a child aged about 10 months, who, it appeared, died a few days previous, but the parents being unable to obtain the burial certificate, an inquest was ordered. The Jury having viewed the body, the following evidence was adduced: Amos Chatfield, father of deceased, deposed to having gone away to his work, on Saturday, 29th of May, and when his wife brought him his dinner, she said the child was ill and vomiting, and could not keep anything on its stomach. When he came home in the evening he did not think anything very bad was the matter, and the child remained in the same state for two or three days. On Wednesday it got worse, and he said if it was not better in the morning, he would go or send for the doctor. The next morning when it was taken out of bed he could see there were signs of death, and he thought it useless then to go for a doctor. By the Coroner: The child died on Thursday night about 10 o'clock. The child was perfectly healthy previous to the 29th May. By the Jury: The child's mother gave it some castor oil, but it had no effect. Mary Chatfield, sister of last witness, deposed that she had known the child from its birth. It was always delicate. It had hooping cough at seven weeks of age and it never seemed to thrive after. First noticed the child ill on Saturday week. It was vomiting. Gave it no medicine. Did not know if any one else gave it any. By the Foreman: Had been nurse to the child; it was brought up with the bottle. Wm. Boothy, a neighbor, deposed to being present at the death of the child. Had seen the child frequently and thought from its appearance it would not live. Caroline Boothy deposed that Mrs. Chatfield told her the little girl was bad on Saturday, the 29th, and she (witness) went over to see it, and it looked very ill. Told the mother she would not raise the baby. Thought so from its appearance, having buried five of her own children. Had some experience in children. Did not give any advice. Believed the child was teething. Did not think anything could have been done for it. A. W. Walls, duly qualified medical practitioner, of Auburn, deposed to having seen the body. There were no marks of violence visible. From outward appearance, should not think the child had been properly nourished. The child was no larger than one of three months of age. By the Jury: It was quite common for children to die in teething, when of delicate health. The size of the child would be accounted for by its being deprived of its mother's breast. Children brought up by hand seldom thrived in this colony. By the Coroner: By not being properly nourished he meant being deprived of its natural nourishment. This being the whole of the evidence, the Jury, without retiring, returned a verdict that Margaret Chatfield died from natural causes.
Parents: Amos CHATFIELD and Margaret GRAHAM.
