POLICE COURT

THEFT OF POTATOES. Month's Gaol for Half-caste Brothers.

Convicted at the Wellington Police Court on Tuesday morning, on a charge of stealing four bags of potatoes to a total value of £3/10/-, two half-caste aborigine brothers were each sentenced to a month's hard labour.

The two brothers are Sydney William Chatfield and Donald Chatfield. Police alleged that the brothers stole four bags of potatoes which were the property of Mr. Ah Yook, of Wellington. In evidence against Sydney William Chatfield, Constable Leslie John Marsh, of Wellington, stated that on January 8, defendant went to a paddock opposite Clifford's store house on the Wellington flats and carried away four bags of potatoes and hid them in some brier bushes in a lane. He later returned with his brother Donald in a taxi and took the potatoes to a store in Nanima Crescent, where he sold them to the proprietor for £2. The potatoes, the constable continued, were the property of Mr. Ah Yook, of Wellington, and defendant had admitted that he had no authority to take then.

MANY PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS
Defendant pleaded guilty and the police prosecutor, Sergt. Kenny, stated that defendant was fined £7 on March 21, 1945, for forging and uttering a cheque, was sentenced to serve three months hard labour on January 24, 1944, for assault on the police, and had many other convictions for drunkeness prior to and since the two convictions. Appearing for the defendant, Mr. F. Davidson said that the accused was a married man with two children to support, and was overcome with the urge to obtain cheap liquor at the time of the offence

CHEAP LIQUOR BLAMED
Asking for leniency t0 be shown to his client, Mr. Davidson said "I submit to Your Worship that the offence was committed in broad daylight and no attempt was made to conceal the theft. This man is not all bad and there is a lot of good in him. At the time of the offence he was trying to obtain money to buy some more cheap iiquor, which is sold to these men in Wellington. The theft was not a sneak thief affair and for the sake of the man's wife and family I ask that Your Worship extend leniency as far as you can in the course of your public duty." Convicting defendant, the P. M., Mr. W. K. Earls said "The maxi- mum penalty for this offence is 12 months' hard labour, but under the circumstances I will deal leniently with the defendant. However, I do not intend to fine the accused but I- will impose, a gaol sentence. You are convicted and sentenced to serve one month's hard labour. I would lik to point out that only for the representations of Mr. Davjdson, I would have imposed a sentence of at least three months." Donald Chatfield, the brother of the previous defendant, was charg- ed with the same offence. Constable Marsh said that the circumstances were, similar to those of Sydney Chatfield and pointed out to the court in evidence that it was his opinion, that Donald Chatfield was only a pawn in the crime and that the real ringleader was his brother, Sydney. Sergt. Kenny stated that defendant had a criminal record and on July 27, 1942, was sentenced to one months' hard labour for stealing tobacco. On February 1, 1943, he was sentenced, to three months' hard labour and fined a total of £12 on three charges at the Dubbo Police Court, which included stealing, trespass and malicious damage to property. Defendant was also fined £3 on; September 16, 1946, for offensive behaviour. Appearing for the accused Mr. Davidson said "I have been talking to the mother of these two lads and she tells me that they are good boys until they get away from home and begin to drink cheap liquor. I ask that Your Worship extend leniency to the defendant and I submit that he was only a party t0 the crime." Mr. W. K. Earls sentenced the accused, to one months' hard labour.

Nine Fined for Heading 'Em
Charged with playing "Heading 'Em" on a vacant lot on the Coonamble Road on 1 January, 9, nine offenders appeared before Mr. Kearsley S.M., yesterday. They were: James Henry Burns, Donald Chatfield, James William Kenneth Daley, Edward Bartley, George Edward Daley, Henry Taylor, Sydney William Chatfield, Arthur Cecil Chatfield, and John Thomas Fleming. Each pleaded guilty. Sgt. Larkin said that the men in the company of about nine or ten others who had escaped arrest, had been playing two-up on the vacant lot to the annoyance of passers-by. One defendant made plea for leniency as, he stated, the game had been played for stakes of pennies and threepences. The Bench and Police, doubted the defendant's statement as to the size of the game.
A fine of £1, in default two days hard labour was imposed. Time to pay was refused.

He was buried on 13 March 1976 in Roman Catholic Ch., Ronan, Lake Co., Montana, USA. He was Roman Catholic. Donald lived in Cleveland, Bon Homme Co., South Dakota, USA 1920/1925. Joanne Chatfield niece states.
When my uncle Donald was 18, he and a young 16 year old girl named Ida May (Mae) Broderson became parents to a girl named Patsy who was born about 1931 it appears. They were made to get married according to my mother's information and I have found the marriage record to prove this, and Patsy was born and taken and raised by my grandparents Lowell and Dorothy. When Uncle Donald married Eleanor (also seen as Elinor) Hawkes in 1935, they then took Patsy and raised her to adulthood. I have a picture of Patsy she sent to my father and it appears to be a high school senior picture and i met her once when she visited my parents when I was young - probably about 13 or so. So, the records that you have are incorrect to indicate that Patsy was my grandparents child - she was my Uncle Donald's child. I do not know what happened to Ida. Patsy did marry a McDonald and have a few children, but ths information is in one of many boxes that have been shelved for many years and I am unclear how many children she had.

Donald was a pipefitter and came to Kansas City to work on a big building complex in downtown Kansas City at the time (c. 1968).

We are sad to announce the passing of 83 year old local musician and songwriter, Don Chatfield, Sunday October 27th, 2013. Don was born in 1929 in Colusa, CA to parents Arthur and Irene Chatfield. He is survived by two brothers, Vernon "Vern" Chatfield, Garry Chatfield and sister, Avis Shinn. He is also survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen, daughters, Jordana and Shoshana, and two grandchildren. Don and Helen lived in Garden Grove for 48 years and raised their daughters there. Don enjoyed coaching their teams in the Garden Grove Girls Softball League and American Youth Soccer Organization and he supported their activities with the Pacifica High School Marching Band. During those years, he delighted in participating in pick up tennis matches at the local high school courts on Saturday mornings. Don adored his grandchildren and made trips whenever he could to San Diego to see them play T-ball, soccer or volleyball. He famously taught his daughters to do "death drops" off the high bar on the backyard swing set when they were young and he carried on by teaching his grandson to go down the slide head first when he was a toddler. He loved family get togethers in Vallejo and San Diego and the card games that would finish out the evenings. To his family, Don was recognized as the best cribbage player on the planet! The jazz community of Orange County will certainly miss this talented member. Don entertained in the area for over 50 years, building a loyal base of avid supporters and guest singers. He was known for his ability to transpose music on the spot into any key, provide the next word or phrase to any flustered singer and he could never be stumped when asked, "Say, I wonder if you know a song, it goes like..." From Don's first musical partner, Jerry Holton, through his solo career and on to his later groups, "A Little Bit of Broadway" and "The Sunset Jazz Band," Don was respected by musicians, singers and listeners of all ages.

When a teenager, he respected a neighbor farmer so much he changed his middle name to Francis. When he chose to be baptized Catholic, he used Francis, his marriage certifiacte is Francis, WW I records are Francis, etc. He just dropped the Lester and used Francis. His nickname was Ted, from the time he was a little one and used to send his teddy bear "slip sliding" down the sacks of four and sugar.
-----
Don's wife Eileen chose to be buried beside her 2nd husband, Gerald Grew. Her empty plot beside Ted is now occupied by two great-grandsons. Brian Robert Biver (1971-2004) and Chad Michael Biver (1973-2003).

Before and during the depression, Ted worked as a delivery driver for Standard Oil home fuel. In those days he would have been called a contract employee. When he filled up his fuel truck he had to buy the fuel. He then made his profit from what his customers paid him. Because he was so kind hearted, he let people slide who said they did not have the money to pay. After almost going broke, in the mid 1940's, he took his family and moved to Washington state for a short time, working in aluminum factories. During the Washington residence his two sons both enlisted in WW II. He then returned to Dubuque, Iowa where he remained until his death.

As a young man at home he was often the provider of the meat for meals, he and his trusty rifle. When his sister "Bird" wrote her memoirs she said, "Ted was the best hunter in our family. He would take a 22 rifle 'single-shot' and bring home all the squirrels and rabbits the family could possibly eat". He was also an avid fisherman. His skill with line, pole, hook and bait fed many a meal at home. He was especially good at catching the elusive Walleye on the Mississippi River below the dam located at the northern part of Dubuque.

He was a family man, loved his children, his wife, his siblings and especially the six of his ten grandchildren he was blessed to see.
