The Hotchkissville Historic District, located in the Weekeepeemee River Valley in the northern part of the Town of Woodbury, Litchfield County Connecticut, USA.
Among the few older houses in the Hotchkissville Historic District that predate the establishment of the village is a colonial saltbox located at the foot of Westwood Road, known as the Yarmouth Chatfield House for an early nineteenth-century owner (72 Westwood Road). Except for the added leanto, it is relatively unchanged since it was erected about 1750. One of the few houses in Woodbury that originally had a one-room deep main block, and the only one of this type in the Hotchkissville Historic District, this colonial farmhouse has a rubblestone foundation and a large center brick chimney. Its three-bay facade displays relatively narrow nine-over-six windows.

Several working farms remained on the periphery of the district, including the one owned by Yarmouth Chatfield, a free black, at the foot of Westwood Road (72 Westwood Road).[3]

Chatfield was one of several former slaves living in Woodbury in the early nineteenth century, but the only one to own property at that time, according to the architectural survey of 1992. He bought the house in 1808 and remained here until his death in 1846.

DEATH OF WILLIAM CHATFIELD
Indian Farmer of Lapeer Succumbs to Blood Poison.
Lapeer, June 10. - William Chatfield one of the best know Indian farmers of this section, is dead from blood poisoning, resulting from an old would received while working on his farm. His father was chief of the Chippewas about 60 years ago in Elba township.
=====
The tall six foot one William Chatfield's Indian name was Waswasung meaning lightning. The missionaries gave him the English name William Chatfield. William was the chieften in his tribe and counseled well that the tribe should take up the ways of the white men, and that the "white father" in Washington was good to them and they must do as he wishes. To set an example to the other Indians he enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Volunteers and served in the Civil War. He was a sharpshooter. His face was badly scarred because he was wounded so many times.

His father was also a chief of the Chippewas and was known among the Indians as "Pamguang" which translated means Thunder Storm Passing.

A socialite article in The Chicago Tribune, Oct. 18, 1942 about the family and the wedding.

We are having the presentment of a nice little season after all, and while debuts may be few. weddings still are with us. Hobie Chatfield Taylor‘s wedding card arrived last week. Wayne Taylor's only son has married a Virginia girl, Mary Owen Lyon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Moncure N. Lyon at Burcellville, VA. The wedding was yesterday at Black Oak Ridge, the Lyon estate out of Washington. Hobie, who is named for his grandpa, Hobart Chatfield Chatfield-Taylor, once Chicago's great cotillion leader, is an officer in the coast guard reserve. Now that the three children of the family are married. Adele and Wayne Taylor have bought and settled at Washington in a nice white house in S street, a quite shallow, small house, attractive to behold. The family was at York House, at Yorktown. when I was in the capital last month, so I saw only the outside shell of their abode.
Children were: Living, Living, Living, Living, Living, Living.

When father H.H. Taylor died (1875), he left his only child $50K, & the rest of his fortune to charity. However, son Hobart Chatfield Taylor contested the will & got the whole $2 million.

On top of this, Hobart inherited about $3.5 million from his "immensely wealthy" uncle Wayne Chatfield (1840-1892) of Cincinnati (his mother's brother), on the condition he add "Chatfield" to his last name. Thus Hobart Chatfield Taylor became Hobart Chatfield Chatfield-Taylor, investor & moderately successful author:

Chatfield-Taylor, Hobart Chatfield, author; born in Chicago, March 24, 1865; son of Henry Hobart Taylor and Adelaide (Chatfield) Taylor. His early and preparatory education was received at Trinity School, Tivoli, New York, and in European schools, he then entered Cornell University, from which he was graduated with the degree of B.S., in 1886; D. Mr. Chatfield-Taylor has contributed to all the principal magazines, and is author of "With Edged Tools"; "An American Peeress"; "Two Women and a Fool"; "The Land of the Castanet"; "The Vice of Fools"; "The Idle Born"; "The Crimson Wing"; "Goldrui: a Biography," just published (1913), etc. Besides contributing articles upon the French classic drama, to the magazines, he has lectured upon Moliere and the French drama of the Seventeenth Century at the University of Chicago, Cornell, Bryn Mawr and other colleges. Joan H CHATFIELD-TAYLOR was born on 14 August 1941 in near, Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, USA. She died Breast Cancer. on 19 October 2012 at the age of 71 in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA. Joan Chatfield-Taylor
Longtime San Franciscan Joan Chatfield-Taylor died on October 19, 2012 in Portland, Oregon, from breast cancer. San Francisco has lost one of its liveliest and most creative personalities.
Born August 14, 1941, near Tucson, Arizona, Joan moved to San Francisco a few years later, where she spent the rest of her life. After earning her BA from Smith College in 1962, she became the fashion editor for the San Francisco Chronicle. Her articles were noted not only for their vivid descriptions of costly clothes, but their sly humor and graceful prose. In the late '70's Joan left the Chronicle to become a successful freelance writer, focusing on travel, architecture and food.
Joan loved to travel-the more exotic and less tamed the better. Her most profound travel experiences included studying cooking in Laos and Vietnam, investigating Israeli border surveillance, and probing the roles of older women in South Africa. Closer to home, she engaged in numerous philanthropic activities, primarily in the areas of education, art and liberal political advancement.
In addition to being a fiercely devoted mother to her two children, Joan forged substantive, meaningful friendships at every point in her life. She retained her friends from nursery school, boarding school, work, chance encounters on trips, and formed close ties with her children's friends, who remember a warm and festive household, exceptional cuisine, and a person sincerely interested in their lives. Every one of them misses her deeply.
Joan is survived by her two children, Christina and Matthew Henry de Tessan, her two grandchildren, Luc and Ben, her son-in-law Rick Wilson, and her brother Michael Thomas.
Joan's memorial service will be held November 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm at the Chapel of Our Lady in the Presidio. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Doctors without Borders.
