-----
After a long and courageous battle with cancer, and with family and her pastor at her side, Charlene Chatfield peacefully passed away on August 27, 2012. Mildred Charlene Insley was born in Fort Scott, Kansas on September 28, 1931 and would have been 81 years old on September 28th.

She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings as well as her husband of 52 years, Charles Chatfield.

She is survived by her children, daughter Ann Corbut and husband Steve; son Mark Chatfield and wife Carlyn; daughter Becky Stevens and fiancé Tim Killins; grandchildren, Lowell Stevens, Marie Chatfield, Beverly Chatfield, Zachary Corbut and Madison Corbut; many nieces and nephews, in-laws and cousins as well as a very large number of friends.

Charlene was vivacious and generous of spirit and time, and she will be sorely missed by all who loved her. She enjoyed her life in this small town and loved her family but she had a strong desire to see more of the world, so on the day after she graduated from high school she and a girlfriend loaded up a Model A Ford and headed for Wichita, Kansas. Just a few years later Charlene ended up in Dallas, Texas where she met Charles Kelton Chatfield. They were married on September 10, 1955. They had 3 children, Ann, Mark and Becky, and the family moved to Houston in 1965 where Charles and Charlene lived out the rest of their years.

Charlene was energetic, spirited, open-minded, kind and faithful. She was a "go-getter" and never used the phrase "I can't". She was a joiner and a doer and loved to get involved. If there was a newsletter to write, a list of phone calls to make, or an organization to be whipped into shape, Charlene would do it. Some of the many groups she joined (and many she then eventually ran) include the Home Demonstration Club, the Dallas Camping Club, the Girl Scouts, the PTA of Madison High School, the Precinct 287 Civic Club, the Friendship Force of Houston and the Bellaire Ladies Tennis Association. During the last few months she was still very active as the Captain of the 9th floor at Clarewood House. She was an active Amway representative for many years. After her children were older she worked as an administrative assistant for the YMCA and then at Butler Stadium for HISD. Along with her husband Charles she volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Charlene was also an avid reader, an enthusiastic theater-goer, a boisterous football fan, a tough tennis partner, and a competitive bridge player.

She and Charles enjoyed many activities together including playing bridge, tennis, golfing, square dancing, and most of all – travel. Charles and Charlene had the privilege of seeing much of the USA and the world. For several years they escaped the heat of Houston summers by taking long trips to cooler locales including Duluth, Minnesota; Gig Harbor, Washington; Anchorage, Alaska; Toronto and Nova Scotia. Some of the countries they visited include Brazil, China, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Russia, Holland, Australia, and New Zealand. Charlene loved adventure, meeting new people, and making friends. Through the Friendship Force, Visiting Friends Association, and Evergreen Travel Club, Charlene made many friends throughout the country and around the globe.

Charlene was of strong faith. She and her family attended Westbury United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, both in Houston. She also attended Unity Church in Houston and she especially enjoyed her visits to Unity Village in Missouri.

Charlene loved her family and she especially enjoyed her grandchildren. She made it to every recital, play, baseball game, soccer game or football game that there was to attend. She participated in events at their schools and would scour the newspaper in order to plan places to take them and things to do.

Even during her last few years as she battled multiple myeloma, Charlene made many friends and fans as she settled into her new home at Clarewood House. Charlene was especially grateful for all the love and support she received there, and her family as well would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff and residents of Clarewood House for helping make the last years of our mother's life ones filled with friendship, camaraderie, humor and love.

The family would like to thank Dr. Henry Zaleski and his staff for their caring and kindness to mother for last 4 years. We also send our gratitude to the nursing and support staff of the 6th Floor Main Northwest unit of the Methodist Hospital and Houston Hospice for the excellent and loving care she received during her final illness and passing.

Charlene was a strong believer in the life everlasting, and we know that she will always remain with us in our hearts, our prayers, and our lives as she watches over us.
