On the night 4th/5th July, 1917, he was in charge of a party which established and consolidated a post in the vicinity of 2 enemy strong points. By his vigorous offensive action he caused these points to be evacuated, and on the night of 6th/7th July, 1917, he again led his Section forward and established another post within 50 yards of the enemy's line of consolidation. On the night of 8th/9th July, 1917, he successfully defended the post against a hostile minor enterprise. During the whole of this work he continually passed through heavy enemy machine gun fire while laying out tests and carrying forward rations pending the construction of communication trenches. This N.C.O.'s coolness and courage throughout inspired his men with the greatest confidence, and his fine example of devotion to duty was chiefly instrumental in gaining ground from the enemy, and establishing our line in a good tactical position.' His wife (she was Jennie Chatfield) who was to follow him as soon as she could get a passage, will probably arrive there before him, for rumour says that she left yesterday by plane. What a surprise for Bill when he lands there. |
