Servnt S F 35 Housekeeper Domestic Sussex - Findon ----- 29 July 1893 Brighton Herald "Mr Edward CHATFIELD, the well-known confectioner, whose business premises have existed successfully in Bond Street, Brighton for nearly half-a-century, can claim to be one of the oldest tradesmen within the borough. His ancestors for upwards of three hundred years were residents of the picturesque parish of Ardingly. Mr Chatfield was born on June 5th, 1812 in Ardingly Street, half a mile from Hapstead Green. The humble tenement has succumbed to time, and on the spot exists a latter day villa. The pretty hamlet, too, has grown and the long absent country bumpkin would scarcely recognise the locality, so fast has the march of improvement spread. Year after year has Mr CHATFIELD, though quite a veteran, visited the scenes of his boyhood, for the love for the home of his parents has been almost of a sacred character. One of the potent attractions that enlisted his sympathy has, however, passed to the great majority, and Ardingly has been deprived quite recently of its oldest resident as well as of the very last of the race that bore the cognomen of Chatfield. She died at the fine old age of ninety-six years. She was a guest at the Jubilee of George III as well as present at the village festivities that celebrated the fiftieth year of the reign of Queen Victoria. The names of the Chatfields of Ardingly are preserved in the Parochial registers from 1558. Few Sussex men possess a better record than does Mr Edward Chatfield. How bright and interesting appears his career. The spirit of enterprise that inspired the hard-working youngster to leave his village associates developed itself to win the struggle of independence, and early in 1829 he came to Brighton where he quickly found employment in one of the prominent thoroughfares, where his industry soon obtained recognition. Having formed endearing social ties, Mr Chatfield began business on his own account at the lower corner of Pimlico (now Tichborne Street), in Church Street, and here it was that the prestige of Chatfield's homemade bread grew apace. The success of his venture induced Mr Chatfield to remove to Bond Street, in the shop now occupied by Mr Cousins. It was whilst he resided here that he had the misfortune to be deprived of his mother and sister, by a fatal railway accident which occurred in the Great Exhibition year (6 June 1851) on the line between Brighton and Lewes. The victims of the calamity were interred in the Hanover chapel Ground, where also repose the remains of Mr Chatfield's father. Some years ago Mr Chatfield acquired more extensive premises on the west side of Bond Street, where steadily the confectionery connection has grown and prospered. Of Mr Chatfield's family of eight, children, three sons and two daughters survive. The concern in Bond Street is now under the careful and experienced guidance of Mr Chatfield's son, who also has an establishment in Church Street, nearly opposite the spot where his parents commenced their business career. Chatfield pere, though over four-score years of age, retains his vitality wonderfully well. His retentive memory recalls many pleasing features of his eighteen years' service on the Board of Guardians, as well as of various episodes in connection with public festivals. Be has been an industrious promoter of Friendly and Building Societies, and, as an earnest worker, sincere, industrious and benevolent, it is not too much to say that he has won widespread esteem, more particularly among the older generations of Brightonians who knew him in his prime. Still hale and hearty, he can often be met in the thoroughfares northwards of the Pavilion, for he even now attends to his business with all the interest and not a little of the activity of those younger days of half a century ago." ----- The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA, Australia : Thursday 19 October 1893) CHATFIELD. - On the 13th September 1893, at Brighton, Sussex. England. Edward CHATFIELD, the beloved father of Mrs. James Dumbrell, of Adelaide, and grandfather of Mrs. F. Vincent and Mrs. W. Blackeby, of Adelaide, and also of Mrs. F. Cozens, of Norwood, in his 82nd year. |

? born 1814, bp. 29 May 1814 at All Saints, Lewes to Thomas and May? or is it Mary and they also had a son Edward? ------ Births and Christenings, Edward CHATFIELD, 1814 name: Edward Chatfield gender: Male baptism/christening date: 29 May 1814 baptism/christening place: ALL SAINTS,LEWES,SUSSEX,ENGLAND father's name: Thomas Chatfield ===== Edward Chatfield (1814-1885) has appeared twice before in these Bulletins (leweshistory.org.uk). Bulletin no.87 identified him as a timber merchant, and the builder of the S.S. Wallands, launched from his Bridge Wharf on New Year’s Day 1866. Selected entries from an 1867 local directory in Bulletin no.55 listed him as a coal timber and slate merchant, a proprietor of steam saw mills, a ship and barge builder and a shipowner, based at North Street, Lewes, and South Street, Eastbourne. He was baptised at All Saints church on 29 May 1814, a younger son of Thomas Chatfield (1786-1876) and his wife Frances (1787-1868). Thomas Chatfield was the son of John Chatfield, a tanner and fellmonger with premises in All Saints parish. At his 1807 marriage Thomas was also described as a tanner, but soon afterwards he established himself as a coal merchant and then also a timber merchant. His mother Frances was a daughter of butcher Trayton Paine, so Edward Chatfield’s family was long established and well connected in the Lewes business community. His father Thomas was constable of the borough of Lewes in the year Queen Victoria inherited the throne, and served again in this role a few years later. He was an active promoter of bringing the new railway to Lewes and of improvements to the Ouse navigation. In 1852 Thomas Chatfield retired from the partnership of Chatfield, son and Sampson, and in the following year Edward Chatfield and his partner Alfred King Sampson, timber, slate and coal merchants of North Street, also bought the South Street business and premises of their main rivals in the timber business, Charles Wille. In the 1861 census Edward Chatfield employed 35 men and 7 boys. In 1864 his partner Alfred King Sampson died, and he continued the business on his own. In the 1841 census Edward Chatfield lived with his parents on the High Street in All Saints parish. In 1844 he married Elizabeth Lash, the daughter of a Suffolk merchant, and in the 1851 & 1861 censuses they and their growing family were living at the other end of the town, still in the High Street but in St Anne’s parish. There were at least nine children born between 1845 and 1861, though one daughter died as a baby. By 1871 the family had moved to St John-sub-Castro parish, and lived at 5 Wallands Terrace. However, by this date Edward Chatfield had become heavily involved in the development of St Anne’s Crescent, and not long afterwards moved to the grand house he built there for himself - he called it 'Belle Vue’, but we know it as Southdown House, for many years the headquarters of the County Library service. He lived there in 1881, by which date he employed 60 men, and died there in 1885 aged 70. Southdown House: Bob Cairns, 'Lewes in Old Picture Postcards’ Like his father and grandfather, Edward Chatfield played a prominent part in the public affairs of the town, serving as a trustee of town properties, as a headborough in the year following his marriage, as a parish officer for St Anne’s parish and as high constable in 1863 and again in 1866. The 30 May 1865 Sussex Advertiser reports that Edward Chatfield, timber merchant, had with his accustomed liberality held his annual festival, presumably for his employees, at the Crown Inn. The Chatfield’s business was continued by his eldest son Colonel Thomas Chatfield (1845-1899). Colonel Chatfield’s title derived from his having been the first Captain commanding the Lewes battery of the Sussex Artillery Volunteers, from which role he was promoted to become the commander of the whole county regiment. In the 1881 census he and his family lived at 118 High Street, St Anne’s, but he later moved to a new house at 7 King Henry’s Road, for which he had plans drawn up by a London architect shortly after his father’s death. Baptism IGI C015353. Death GRO 2c 141 3rd qtr 1891. Linen draper, Landed Proprietor. Helped layout the streets of Farnborough and moved there in 1863. Census 1881: CHATFIELD, Edward, born abt 1815 in Oxted, Surrey. Now living in Farnborough, Hants. There is a newpaper article stating he died at Stirling Villas, Alexandra Road, Farnborough, Hampshire. "Death OF MR. E. CHATFIELD. HIS PART IN FARNBOROUGH. Farnborough sustains a loss in the death of Mr. Edward CHATFIELD, which occurred at his residence, Stirling Villas, Alexandra Road, on Wednesday. Mr. CHATFIELD, who was in his eighty-fifth year, had lived at Farnborough for over thirty years and took part in its development. His interest in Church work there was very keen. He was mainly instrumental in the building of St. Mark's Church in 1881, and had been identified with it ever since, having been a churchwarden and a very large donor to the church funds. It was he who chose the site for the erection of the edifice, and only last year he put in the large west window and another window to the memory of his late wife and sister-in-law. The lectern, too, was a gift of his, and speaking generally he had been a most liberal subscriber towards the maintenance of the church and schools ever since their erection. Everything indeed, affecting the welfare of the parish found in him a warm supporter. It was in 1863 that Mr. Chatfield actually came to Farnborough, his object then being to buy land and develop the district for residential purposes on behalf of a public company. At the time the land was practically covered with heather and brambles Eastbourne was then being developed, and Mr. Curry, the architect of the company on behalf of which Mr. Chatfield was acting. had laid out the roads there. He came to Farnborough and went over the land with Mr. CHATFIELD, and it was decided that the roads should be laid out similarly to those at the south coast watering place. Stirling Villas, in one of which Mr. Chatfield was residing at the time of his death, were built by the company, and the deceased gentleman himself built Croxted House. When the roads were laid out they were named by Mr. Chatfield from personages or events connected with them. Alexandra road is an example of this. This was planted with an avenue of beech, lime, and chestnut trees, and named it after her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales, who drove along it on the occasion of her visit to the camp. In 1874 the company was would up and the land sold, Mr. Chatfield being appointed the liquidator of the estate, which proved sufficient to pay all the shareholders. Up to a month ago Mr. Chatfield was in the habit of travelling up to London once or a week, he being chairman of the British Mutual Bank and a director of the Accident Insurance Company, St. Swithin's-lane. His illness really commenced about three years ago, when he had a stroke of paralysis, which, although he may be said to have been ailing ever since did not impair his faculties. Since then he has had another stroke, but had been confined to his bed for less than a week before his demise. He was a widower. his wife having died about two years and four months ago. There was only one child of the marriage - a son, who died over forty years ago at the age of ten years. Mr. Chatfield was of course well known and equally well respected. His loss will be much felt at Farnborough. The funeral takes place on Monday at Highgate Cemetery, where Mr. Chatfield's wife and son already be buried. Before the remains are taken to London the first part of the burial service will be read at St Mark’s Church, Farnborough, at 10.30a.m. Aldershot News, July 1st 1899" Chatfield Close in Farnborough probably named after him. |
