CHATFIELD SarahAbigail Harger, John Davis Sr.’s third wife, introduced her new step-son, John Davis Jr., to her sixteen year old niece, Sarah CHATFIELD, daughter of Abigail’s older sister, Anna Chatfield and John Chatfield. John Jr. and Sarah Chatfield probably lived north on Chestnut Tree Hill, in Oxford. In 1868 Four families with the last name of "Davis" lived on Chestnut Hill Road. Chestnut Hill Road is located in 1987 in the eastern part of Oxford township. Sarah and her child both died on January 20, 1721. The children were young when their mother died: Joseph was 13, Dan 11, Mindwell 9, Abigail 8, Rachael 5, and Betty 2. John Jr. aged 46, must have had help looking after these children-possibly from his step-mother, his older sister, or an Indian servant. His step-mother and sister were busy raising his half siblings. |
The wedding ceremony was conducted by Major Ebenezer Johnson, the head of the "plantation" of Derby Township ( Vital Records v.2, p.24). They were not married by the minister. |

Query died 1791. ===== In 1764 Isaac Mott was invited to minister in Ditchling "by the request of Michael Chatfield and Thomas Wood". Michael Chatfield was Sarah's uncle and Thomas Wood his son-in-law, married to his daughter Lucy. They remained in Ditchling for about ten years. Isaac and Sarah had six children. Nothing is known about two of them, Chatfield and Joseph. A daughter, Sarah, was buried in Ditchling in January 1786. In 1775 Isaac is recorded as living in Cuckfield while holding freehold land at Ditchling occupied by Benjamin Davis. It was in Cuckfield that Isaac died in 1779, at the age of 59. By this time, his first family with Elizabeth Harman were grown up and had moved away. His second family with Sarah Chatfield were still quite young, with the youngest, Mary, only seven. It's likely they were looked after with help from Sarah's family in Ditchling. Sarah died in 1791. ----- Named in fr's will 1741. |

So both are 30. The 1851 census seems right as place of birth fits. It also shows Sarah as a Shoe binder as in 1841. Ages she 42 and he 40. Is your Sarah the one who who died in 1858 as the place of the 1851 census and the 1858 death fit. The GRO index did not state age at death then. The Sarah who died in Shoreditch 1876 may be the one who married a John Graham in 1852. See below. The only thing is that her age fits and he is a Porter. The 1861 census showing John is in the Parish of St Andrews, Municipal Ward of Farringdon Without, Holborn, London. Farringdon Road has a tube station and is an major thoroughfare. I don't know but it is possible it is not the same man, his age is two to three years out. There are quite a few John Graham's who married a Sarah. One was in Whitechapel a wee bit to the south of Shoreditch in 1852. There are still many clothing factories in the area as well as markets or with easy access to the nearby large London markets of Billingsgate (now moved out), Smithfield and Sptialfields. |
No marriage found other than census for 1841 and 1851 showing Sarah Graham born Cuckfield 1808 and 1871 showing born Sussex. |
