Mrs. Philler, 91, was an Atlanta native born on July 13, 1922. An avid learner throughout life, she attended Georgia State College as a 16 year-old before marriage to Clarence W. Mills, Jr., M.D. and the war years interrupted her education. She returned to Georgia State University in the 1960s following her husband’s death, completing her BA and MA degrees in education. She spent the next two decades sharing her love of reading and nature with students in the Atlanta Public School System, working as a highly respected teacher in the Challenge program at Jackson Elementary School until her retirement in 1988. She also shared this period of her life, and the many happy hours it provided for reading books, gardening, watching birds, and writing letters and stories, with a devoted second husband, the late Henry A. Philler. She loved and was loved by her family, students and many friends. She met many of these treasured friends at Peachtree Presbyterian and Central Presbyterian Church and, in her later years, at Canterbury Court retirement community. Mrs. Philler is survived by her children and their spouses, Sally Mills & Tom Bowman of Atlanta, Criss Mills & Tonya Beach of Atlanta, Pat & Julie Mills of Champaign, IL, and Kelly Mills & Cindy Womack of Rome, GA; by her nephew Mills Kelly, of Manassas, VA, and his wife Susan and sons Ross and Spencer; by her grandchildren and their spouses, Eva Hurayt of Atlanta, Anna & Matt Hullum of Austin, TX, Meghan Sutherland & Brian Price of Toronto, Canada, Devin Mills of Champaign, IL, Maggie Mills of Falls Church, VA, and Rory Mills of Champaign, IL; and by her great-grandsons Webb & Mills Hullum of Austin, TX.
