Enos, about 5'2", red hair, blue eyes was a blacksmith, emigrated with his parents & siblings from Wales. He served in the Civil War as a private in Co. D., 50th Reg. PA Inf, captured and taken to Andersonville, died from Scorbutus. He was baptized 18 Apr 1830 at the Blananerch Calvanistic Church, Aberporth, Cardinganshire. A Mr. Jones paid him to serve in his place. After he died, Jones married his widow, Armina, gave away the two oldest sons, and took the youngest back to Pennsylvania.

Members of the 1st Congregational Church of Alton--if Rev. Robert Kemper is sick or out of town they had an existent replacement in his wife, Rev. Virginia Kemper. The Kempers are one of the few remaining husband and wife team ministers in the county. She is a licensed minister and worked closely with her husband in all aspects of the ministry. At the time they married in 1933 Virginia was the church pianist. She got her preaching license when she was asked to serve as interim pastor of a church in Northern Illinois where the minister was injured in an accident.

V.I.P. Manor changed mother's life
My mother is 80 years old and worked as a homemaker. She was very upset that I brought her to V.I.P. Manor in April 1997. She said she would not stay and demanded to go home.
When she arrived she was not able to stand alone and needed two assistants. She was very depressed and was dependent on the staff for her care. She stayed in her room except for meals.
Now she is able to stand and walk from her room to the dining room and with one assistant and the use of a walker.
She now visits with other residents in the lobby and in the dining room. She goes to other residents' rooms to visit and have prayer with them. She praises others when she sees them in the hall. She has adjusted quite well and now is satisfied to call this home and tells everyone she's glad she chose V.I.P. She rarely has a complaint about the employees or other residents and is very appreciative for what they do for her.
She is much more motivated now. She interacts well with others and encourages others to attend activities. She is a real inspiration to others here in the facility whether it be resident or staff.
You are truly a special person, Virginia Kemper, and we love you.

WOODRIVER--Virginia M. Kemper, 91, died at 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000 at VIP Manor.
Born Dec. 5, 1908 in Alton, she was a daughter of the late Willard and Charlotte Owens. A homemaker, she was past president of Alton Women's Club.
In St. Louis on Oct. 8, 1933, she married the Rev. Robert Chatfield Kemper. He preceded her in death. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Graham and Margie Kemper of LaGrange Park and Larry O. and Anne Kemper of St. Louis; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Don Owens of Naperville. She was preceded in (death) by her husband, parents and two brothers.
Graveside services will be conducted at noon Thursday at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens. The Rev. Orrin Anderson will officiate.

From my recollection I think he was the uncle of Mildred Owens Duncan whose family lived across the street from my grandparents in 1934. Mildred's mother sent her to help my grandmother when my aunt was born that year. Both families ended up moving from Alton, Madison, IL to Bunker Hill, Macoupin, IL where Mildred met and married her classmate Francis Duncan. I know Francis' nieces. They taught me how to walk on stilts in their Grandma and Grandpa Duncan's side yard. Those were the days and it's too sad that today's kids don't know how to have fun and create good memories to tell about when they get older.

They had probably just separated shortly before the census was taken or the divorce was not yet final. In the 1940 census both are listed as "widowed". Now I will say sometimes couples did separate but never got divorced so they could claim widowed for county financial support when it came to paying monthly bills but more so getting health care very cheap or free. However, since neither are mentioned in the obits I would say they most likely were divorced.

MR. OWREY'S FUNERAL
All that was mortal of the late Adam Owrey was tenderly laid to an eternal rest Thursday in Woodland cemetery. The sacred rites were conducted at the late residence at Fourth and Park avenue, Rev. B.D. Evans, pastor of the deceased officiating. He paid the dead a glowing tribute of respect and his words were impressively spoken. A choir led by Edward Todd sang several beautiful and favorite hymns of which Mr. Owrey was greatly fond during his life. Many floral offerings were seen and each mutely attested the high esteem in which the deceased was held.
The pall bears were his relatives and were as follows: Joseph Owrey and son, Cyrus, John Lucas, W.H. Owrey and son Will and William Truby.

The Ironton Register, Thurs., July 16, 1891 (Ironton, OH)
Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Owrey's little daughter, Clara, died at Maysville, last Sunday, where Mrs. Owrey was visiting. Cholera infantum was the cause. Mrs. Owrey received word of her sickness and arrived there before her death. The funeral took place from their residence here Tuesday.
Note: Maysville, KY was Mrs. (Ida)Owrey's hometown. It is also believed that "Mrs. Owrey received word,etc" is an error, and it was Mr.(William) Owrey who arrived before Clara's death.
