FRANKLINVILLE - Wayne A. Nottingham Sr., 67, of 204 Hardy Corners Road, formerly of Olean, passed away Thursday (June 2, 2016) at home from an apparent heart attack.

Wayne was born June 12, 1949, in North Tonawanda and was a son of James and Noreen Shoen Nottingham. He was formerly married to Beverly Chatfield. On Dec. 21, 1991, he married Linda S. Conner, who survives.

Wayne worked as a machinist at Harrison Radiator, which became Delphi in Buffalo, for over 30 years, retiring in 2005. He also worked as a machinist at Buffalo Pumps and St. Mary's Machine Shop.

Wayne was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and a member of the Franklinville VFW. He was formerly a member of the Union Auto Workers Union.

Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping and anything outdoors, but he truly enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Along with his wife, Wayne is survived by his mother, Noreen S. Bagley of Punxsutawney, Pa.; three children, Tammy M. (Gary) Schmahl of Shermansdale, Pa. (She md. 1st Don Watson), Wayne A. (Dianna) Nottingham Jr. of Niagara Falls (he md. 1st Linda Marie Confer, Conner) and Eric J. Nottingham of Olean; 10 grandchildren, Wayne A. Nottingham III, Samantha K. Nottingham, James P. Nottingham, Krista L. Belward, Beau G. Nottingham, Jake E. Nottingham, Ryan M. Watson, Brittany A. Watson, Shardae L. Schmahl and Natalie J. Schmahl; nine great-grandchildren; four siblings, Paul (Tammy) Nottingham of Grotton, Mass., Jim Nottingham of LaBelle, Fla., Lee (Sherry) Nottingham of Elmira and Valerie (Shane Kelley) Nottingham of Centerville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Letro-McIntosh-Spink Funeral Home Inc., 646 E. State St., Olean, Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Thursday (June 9, 2016) from 1 to 3 p.m., at which time a memorial service will be held. The Rev. Millard C. Cook, associate pastor of the Olean First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor in Olean. Full military honors will be accorded by Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892.

About 1930 Mary was brought from a foster home in Peabody, Massachusetts to the home of John Morrissey and his wife on Ridgeway Road in Medford, Massachusetts. Her sister had been living with the Morrissey's since she was an infant. Apparently, the Morrissey's called Ada Elizabeth, Betty or Betty Ann for short. The sisters were raised as foster children by the Morrissey's until the age of majority (18 years old.) [Not quite correct as Mary was there aged 20 on the 1940 census.] My mother came to regard Mrs. Morrissey as her mother. During this time Mary was told her middle name was Jane. From her birth record we only know that her middle initial was A.

During World War II Mary worked for the 197 Electric Shop at the Charlestown Navy Yard. The navy yard was engaged in the constructions, repair and servicing of vessels of the USA Navy. She said that during her work at the navy yard many of the ships that came in for repair were English ships. While working at a buffing machine cleaning coils her hand was crushed. Her left thumb was severed off and all the fingers in her hand were broken. She said, "All I remember was seeing a lot of blood and I passed out." After recovering from the injuries she returned to work at the navy yard in a clerical assignment.

My mother Mary only saw her father Thomas one time since the family break-up. When she was separated from her first husband Thomas Fraser and contemplating marriage to my father George McLaughlin, she decided to take the bus to Worcester to meet her father. She said she didn’t stay long… She said, “He was No Good and I didn’t want anything to do with him, and that was that.”
