Jerry was a graduate of Auburn University as well as an alumni of Georgia Southern University. He felt called to become a minister after his college days and pastored many Primitive Baptist congregations, during which time he also authored several books. His continuing thirst for knowledge led him to pursue a career in the pharmaceutical industry with Boehringer Ingelheim and retired after 32 years with the company. He was greatly admired and respected by all of his colleagues.
He had such a zeal for life and cherished spending time with his family. He loved fishing in the Ogeechee River. He loved his back yard birds and was an avid photographer. He excelled in the sport of race walking, enjoyed watching football, loved music and art and was an international traveler. Even after his retirement, he continued studying and learning his love of anthropology. He will always be remembered by all of us whose lives he touched.
He was preceded in death by his father, Beamon Roger Newsome; mother, Elizabeth Olivia Smith Newsome; and three brothers, James Richard Newsome, Charles Randall Newsome and Beamon Lavon Newsome.
His is survived by his wife of 40 years, Anna Juliet Chatfield Newsome; a brother, William R. "Billy" Newsome (Grace); and six children, Jerry Roger Newsome, Terry Lowe Newsome, Gerry Calvin Newsome (Kim), Sherry Olivia Newsome, Jayelle Alexandra Pate (Andrew) and Jerremy Alexander Newsome; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives, and a very special life-long friend, Shelby Jean Lowe Newsome.
There will be a private memorial service held for the family and close friends to pay tribute to a great man.
Low Country Cremation Services and Burial is serving the Newsome family.
