Luella was the second youngest of nine known children, born in Ohio. She grew up in Braceville and Warren, Ohio. She married Carl William Piltz in 1914 and had 4 sons born between 1915 and 1936. The family moved to Detroit, Michigan between 1915 and 1916. They lived on Marcus Street and then had a home built on College near the Detroit City Airport. Luella lived in this home until moving to Petoskey in the mid-1970's.

Luella was an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. She sang in the choir and belonged to a quilting group there. She was talented at all types of needlework, including quilting, crochet, embroidery, and tatting. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and playing all types of card games. She spent many summers at her son's cottage in Waterford on Lotus Lake.
