The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : Friday 29 October 1858) The following letters appear in the Sydney Morning Herald of the 26th inst., with reference to the alleged rumors of the captain of the Eagle having thrown back a bag of letters which contained "the first discouraging news from Port Curtis." The fact that such rumors existed, and that a strong feeling of dissatisfaction prevailed in consequence, has been established by various but concurrent testimony. It will be gratifying to everyone that sufficient evidence should be forthcoming to relieve Captain Chatfield of so grave an imputation. It will be noticed that Mr. Paterson, the manager of the Australian Steam Navigation Company, had heard this rumor previous to the last departure of the Eagle " from Sydney :- ----- TO THE EDITOR OF THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. " Sir,-I observe that your Melbourne correspondent, in his letter in to-day's Herald, has repeated an absurd rumor, which, from a leading article in the Melbourne Argus of last Thursday, seems to have been conveyed thither by the master of the steamer City of Hobart, to the effect that Captain CHATFIELD, of the Australian Steam Navigation Company's steamer Jingle, had, on his first visit to Keppel Bay, refused to convey thence to Sydney some letters, or a bag of letters, which contained unfavorable news from the Canoona gold-fields, or had thrown such bag on shore after having been put on board his vessel. Having heard this rumor previous to the last departure of the Eagle, although it was almost too absurd to notice, I chanced to name it to Captain CHATFIELD, when he assured me that there was not the slightest foundation for the story, and that it is nothing more than a mischievous fabrication. As The Argus has chosen to make this idle rumor the basis of some very indignant animadversions in a leading article, in which the officers of the A. S. N. Co. are alluded to, and your correspondent has repeated it, may I request that you will have the goodness to give insertion to this in to-morrow's Herald, and oblige yours faithfully, "JAMES PATERSON, Manager." ----- "TO THE EDITOR OF THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD. "Sir,-In reference to the rumor mentioned in your Melbourne correspondent's letter, and which is also quoted in a leading article in The Argus of 21st instant, that the captain of the Eagle steamship either refused to take a mail for Sydney or throw it over- board, I beg to state that I was present at Rockhampton on the 6th of October at the time the Eagle hauled alongside the A.S.N.Co.'s wharf, when the same charge was preferred. Immediately on landing Captain Chatfield requested the persons who could substantiate it to come forward. Out of more than 200 that surrounded him, not one did so, and he then most clearly and emphatically declared the rumor to be perfectly untrue. Perhaps I may as well add that l am not known to Captain CHATFIELD, and had he been here should not have thus troubled you. " Yours, &c, FAIR PLAY. Sydney, 26th October." ----- In 1884 he was superintendent of the Sailors' Home in Sydney. ----- Mariners and ships in Australian Waters DUKE OF EDINBURGH of Sydney, CHARLES STEPHEN FERGUSON CHATFIELD, Master, Burthen 244 Tons from the Port of BRISBANE to SYDNEY, New South Wales, 16th June 1876 ----- Australia, New South Wales, Census, 1891 Name C S F Chatfield Event Place Sydney City, New South Wales, Australia ----- The Inquirer & Commercial News (Perth, WA : Friday 19 August 1898) The death is announced of Captain Charles Stephen Ferguson CHATFIELD, at one time well known in the coastal trade and and in mining circles. |
