John enlisted from Derby, CT in Capt. Leavenworth's Co., Oct 1, 1777 for three years, discharged Mar 20, 1780. John served as Pvt. in the 8th Co., 6th CT Reg., under Capt. Samuel Gale and Col. Parsons; also marched in "The Lexington Alarm, 1776". He was b. Mar 05, 1728/29 at Killingworth, CT and d. Aug 24, 1786 on the banks of Newfoundland.
REV WAR pension application #S38605, his descendants are eligible for membership in D.A.R.
After the close of the REV WAR, he went on a whaling voyage. During this voyage John CHATFIELD, II, d. in Newfoundland. He was taken ill with cramp colic and by his request was put ashore on the Banks of Newfoundland where he very soon died.
