Carried on his mothers business at 9 Parade, Tunbridge Wells, under the name M.S.Strange and son. He was the first member of the family to take part in local affairs and politics. Long connected with the governing body, joining the Local Board in 1875 and elected an Alderman of the incorporated borough in 1900. He was conservator of the Commons, a librarian of the Literary Society and for 33yrs a deacon of the Congregational Church.
