After serving an apprenticeship in Lewes as a Printer, was an assistant at John Colbran's establishment in the High St and left home for Burnley in 1857 where he joined the firm of Burghope, manufacturing stationers and printers, in which he eventually became a partner. He became a Justice of the Peace and prominent Congregationalist. He was joint editor with Edward durrant of 'The Magpie', a monthly Tunbridge Wells periodical of the chatty kind. It ran into 17 issues, the last being 16 June 1876. He was also an antiquarian.
