Dairy Cattle Authority Dies
FORT COLLINS, Colo. [AP] -- Dr. Charles N. Shepardson, 79, an internationally recognized authority on dairy cattle, died here Thursday after a long illness.

Shepardson served as dean of the School of Agriculture at Texas A&M from 1944 to 1955 and was head of the dairy husbandry department at the College Station school from 1928 to 1944.

He had been an instructor at Colorado State University, then Colorado A&M, from 1920 to 1928, and was graduated from the Fort Collins school in 1917. He was born in Littleton, Colo.

He served as the U.S. Delegate to the World Dairy Congress in Berlin in 1937 and in the 1940s and 1950s served as head of many dairy cattle organizations.

Shepardson was chairman of the board of directors of the Houston branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in 1955, and was a member of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. from 1955 to 1967. He served on a consulting basis since 1967.

Shepardson earned his master's degree at Iowa State and his doctorate at CSU. He was instrumental in establishing a new CSU fund-raising foundation, and was named chairman of the foundation's board of trustees in 1974, The Shepardson Building in the agricultural school is named after him.

Shepardson's wife, Lillian, died in 1973, and he has no survivors.

Charles became the Dean of Texas A & M University School of Agriculture. President Eisenhower subsequently appointed him to the Federal Reserve Board to represent agricultural farming interests.

Aug 10, 1959, The Greeley Daily Tribune, Greeley, Weld Co., CO:
Shepardson To Address C.S.U. Commencement
FORT COLLINS -- An address by one of Colorado State University's more noted alumni, Charles N. Shepardson, will feature the Aug. 14 summer commencement exercise at the University.

Shepardson, a 1917 graduate of CSU and now a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C., also will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the school in recognition of his distinguished achievement.

The graduates and faculty will begin gathering at 10 a.m. near Ammons Hall and the commencement program will start at 10:30 a.m. in the Oval. There are 79 candidates for bachelor's degrees and 60 students are candidates for master's degrees.

An honor student and a three-times All-Conference football center at CSU, Shepardson went on to earn wide recognition as a leader in agriculture, economics and banking. Following his graduation from CSU in 1917, he served as an Army captain overseas in World War I. In 1919 he took a position as animal husbandman for the Wyoming University Extension department.

Shepardson, a native of Littleton, returned to CSU as associate professor of animal husbandry from 1920 to 1928. In the meantime he received a master's degree in 1924 from Iowa State College. He was appointed head of the dairy husbandry department at Texas A&M College in 1928 and in 1944 he was named Dean of Agriculture at the college.

He led a dairy development program in Texas at a time when the cotton industry was in economic distress and when there was an interest in dairying as a means of providing a better balanced farm program. His contribution of technical knowledge vital to the improvement of the agricultural program in Texas and neighboring states was recognized by his appointment in 1950 as a director of the Federal Reserve Bank and later by his appointment to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

In four years on the latter assignment Shepardson has come to be regarded nationally as one of the outstanding members of the Board. Shepardson has held offices in a number of organizations. He served as chairman of the resident instruction section of the Association of Land Grant Colleges and Universities in 1947, from 1940 to 1943 he was director of the American Jersey Cattle Club. He was president of the Texas Dairy Products Assn. from 1942 to 1944. He also was a member of the Texas Board of Examiners for Teacher Education from 1953-55 and a member of the National Education Assn. He is on the Inter-American Committee for Dairy Industry, a member of the American Science Assn.; and in 1937 he was a U. S. delegate to the World Dairy Congress in Berlin.

Shepardson and his wife set up in 1956 the Shepardson fund. Its purpose is to encourage young members of the CSU teaching staff to make their professional careers in teaching and to assist them in improving their competence as teachers.

Son of a Union Civil War surgeon.

"Mar 19, 1901: ACCIDENT, SAYS INVESTIGATORS — How Noah Shepardson of Conifer, Colorado Lost his Life. LITTLETON, Colo. (To The Republican.) — As to the death of Noah Shepardson of Conifer, Colo., we, the undersigned, wish to make the following statement and set the whole matter right in the interests of all parties and friends of Mrs. N. Shepardson: Mr. Shepardson drove up into the timber in the forenoon to cut two red spruce poles to make a rack to haul ties on. He had cut the poles [and] was returning home. He stopped and called to his man, Tom Shields, who was cutting ties, about 9 rods away, asking Shields if he wanted his broad-ax. Shields answered no. Shepardson then drove on a short distance on the hillside, which was quite steep, and many trees in the road kept him busy clearing them. He was about to hit a tree and was turning his team away from it when the fore wheel missed it, but the brake beam struck it, caused by the hind wheel sliding about a foot, and that threw the wooden brake-bar, which was about seven feet long, forward with great force. He stood up in the box, leaning up hill and braced himself over the right edge of the wagon box. It threw him forward onto the sideboard of the box, striking his forehead there. The bar struck the crown of his head, causing a fracture of the skull about as large as a half dollar. Mr. Shields went down at noon to his dinner, fed the stock, went in and Mrs. Shepardson asked him where Mr. Shepardson was. He said he started down before noon, and probably he had stopped to bring in a load of wood. They waited an hour longer and Mrs. Shepardson sent Shields to look for her husband. Shields soon came back, saying Shepardson was hurt badly. Mrs. Shepardson and two men ran up the road and Shields followed in a carriage and soon overtook them. When they got there Shepardson was still conscious, but could not talk. They took him to the house and sent for Dr. Baker of Evergreen. He made an examination and said there was no hope for him to live. The place on the back of Shepardson's head had a large clot of blood under the scalp. The doctor cut it open and took it out to relieve the pain. Mr. Shepardson lived till 7 p.m. Mrs. Shepardson sent a telephone message to her brother, J.H. Chatfield of Littleton to come at once and early Wednesday morning he and R.D. Herrick drove up there and they, with Jesse Ray, Tom Shields, Mr. Kennedy and two other men, went up to the place of the accident and made a thorough examination and all six men decided that it was purely an accident and blamed no one. J.H. CHATFIELD, R.D. HERRICK — Mrs. Shepardson says her husband has never had any trouble with any of his men and was held in high esteem by all of them. The Shepardson funeral was held this afternoon at Littleton. (Unidentified newspaper clipping in James Herrick Chatfield family Bible)"

May 10, 1907, The Rockford Morning Star:

Former Resident of Rockford Passed Away in Ohio.

Dr. Noah M. Shepardson, formerly of Rockford, more recently of Ohio, passed away at the home of his son, Otis Shepardson at Fremont, Ohio, Wednesday, word being received here yesterday of his passing. Death came from the general breaking down of old age.

Decedent had lived in Rockford many years and had his home and office in Wall street. His wife died several years ago and he married again after some time. His wife survives and four sons are also left.

He was a Knight Templar and in his prime was active in Masonic circles. The remains will be interred at Fremont.

Military: Civil War, Union Army, 23 NYLA

Occupation: Laborer, carpenter, farmer, mechant, physician
-----
NOTES: "After divorcing Lydia, Noah moved at least seven times in his 38 years left on earth:
1870 census: 1st record found as a doctor
Office: 5th Court St. Kankakee, Illinois [home/office]
1879 Office: 30th Front St., Fremont, Ohio
1885 Office: 494 Grand River Ave., Detroit, Michigan
1886 Office: South Front St., Muncie, Indiana
1890 Office: 113 South Illinois St., Indianapolis, Indiana
1891 or 82 in Freeport, Illinois (near Rockford)
1892 purchased home in Rockford
1895 office/home 402 Wall St. & corner of S. Main.
1898 moved to 316 Wall St.

According to his military records: during the Civil War he went on detached duty from the 8th N.Y. Heavy Artillery. (His tombstone reads 23 NYLA-New York Light Art., but he never reported to it). He was assigned active duty in New Berne North Carolina as a street inspector. The war lasted seven more months after he enlisted.

Noah attended Bennett Medical College-Eclectic Coll. of Med. & Surg. in Chicago briefly in 1870, just prior to settling in Kankakee.

There is a book titled "County Physicians of Kankakee,"1878, that claims Noah had 22 years medical experience but that is highly unlikely—according to the evidence of numerous N.Y. censuses which title him as laborer, farmer, or carpenter prior to and during the war years.

Noah's second wife, Ollie or Olive, was 26 when he married her in 1882. At the time she was widowed. His dalliances with her ended his first marriage. However, he married wife #2 before getting a divorce. She died 6 months after he married her. Her death certificate only gives fever as the cause, but the county mortality records for the Detroit area where they lived recorded 6 or 7 victims of scarlet fever for the same time period. Her age at death was 28.

At the time of Olive's death, her parents (Mr. & Mrs. James C. Potter), lived in Monroe County, Michigan. She died July 22, 1882. She and Noah were living in Wyandotte, Wayne Co., Michigan, a small suburb near Detroit. Monroe Co. is the first county in Michigan just north of Toledo. She is probably buried in one of those two places.

His third wife, Mary, was age 31 at the time they married in 1884, also in Michigan, but they later moved to Rockford, Illinois. She would die a frightening death. Her chest cavity and internal organs began to harden to the consistency of "bone" and eventually she could no longer take in fluids or food. A modern term for something similar if not the same thing is scleroderma.

Wife #4, Mary L. Hare, was 30 at the time of their marriage which took place on Sept. 30th 1901, just 8 months after wife #3's death. They separated (at least he came home to his first family in Fremont, Ohio to die). Wife #4 later applied for and was granted his civil war pension."
