LEAR Louise Jones, 90, of Lexington, KY, widow of Marvin Lear, beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died on Jan 5, 2016, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Lexington on Jan 14, 1925, and was the daughter of the late Robert William and Mayme Flanders Jones.
She is survived by her four children, Catherine Lear Chatfield, William M. Lear, Jr. (Evangeline), Carol Lear Bryant (Richard), and Barbara Lear Thomason (William); eight grandchildren, Holly Chatfield Reik (James), Jennifer Lear Eversole, Carrie Lear Milner (Barrett), Robert William Lear, Eric Bryant (Amanda) and Hunter Bryant, Melissa Thomason Chambless (Phillip) and Dr. Laura Thomason Dickens (Jack); nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Connor and Caroline Eversole, Cole, Tucker and Price Milner, Lillian Louise Bryant and Mason and Weston Reik; Cutchin Powell and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ann Jones Vise, her granddaughter, Marcie Reynolds Thomason, and her grandson, Charles Brandon Chatfield.
Mrs. Lear attended the Cassidy Elementary School, Morton Junior High School, Henry Clay High School, and the University of Kentucky, where she worked in the Registrar's office. Never one to seek the spotlight, Mrs. Lear devoted her entire life to teaching, loving, nurturing, caring for others and molding the character of those around her. She taught her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the joy of reading, the virtue of patience, the rewards of giving to others, the fun of a dry sense of humor and the gift of laughter. She took enormous delight in every member of her family, relishing each milestone, new undertaking and achievement without ever seeking credit for herself. She had a special place in her heart for the youngest members of her clan and never tired of holding them, playing with them and teaching them at the earliest possible age.
To Marvin, her husband of more than 60 years, Mrs. Lear was companion, business assistant, bookkeeper, cheerleader on the golf course, helper and supporter in all things and, in his last years, caregiver; in his words "a pyramid of strength and adaptability." After his passing, she displayed those qualities in even greater measure as the matriarch of her growing family. Mrs. Lear was a long-time devoted member of Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church and a loyal friend to a group of ladies she had known since her high school days. She loved her farm in Jessamine County, her view of the lake behind her house in Lexington, her "sweets" including the cream candy she made from a recipe she inherited from her mother, her summer vegetables, her Kentucky Wildcats, and most of all her family. She departed this life for her Heavenly home knowing that she was loved equally in return. Mrs. Lear's family wishes to extend thanks to those who cared for her in recent months, and in particular her special friend, Frances Moberly. Visitation will be at Kerr Brothers, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, on Thu, Jan 7, 2016, from 5-7pm and from 10-11am Fri, at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, 180 East Maxwell Street.
The funeral service will begin at 11am at the Church. Burial will follow at Lexington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eric Bryant, Hunter Bryant, Robert Lear, Cutchin Powell, Phillip Chambless and Jack Dickens. Contributions may be made to: Marcie Reynolds Thomason Student-Athlete Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Henry Clay High School, 2100 Fontaine Road, Lexington, KY 40502; Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church Mission Fund, 180 East Maxwell Street, Lexington, KY 40508; and Baby Health Service, 1590 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, KY 40504.
