He was born July 29, 1935 in Coldwater, MI the son of Albert "Red" and Mary (Latta) Chatfield. Carl and his wife Kay have lived in St. Johns for only a short period of time coming from Saranac, MI. He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Johns and formerly was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Saranac. Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus and loved bowling, hunting, fishing, traveling, coin collecting and playing cards. He was an entrepreneur for most of his working career and at one time was the owner of the St. Johns Dog N Suds. Carl retired from the State of Michigan, Department of Corrections. On July 30, 1955 he married Kay Andrews and she survives him. Also surviving are his children, Theresa (Edward) Dobson of Coldwater, MI, Carl Jr. (Kristal) of Lewisburg, TN, Diane (Bill) Glowacki of St. Johns, Kelly (Harold) LaLonde of Traverse City, Sharon (David) Zebell of Battle Creek, Dawn (Barry) Woodhams of Niceville, FL; 15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one sister, Dorothy Ernst of Adrian; one brother, DeWayne of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Kenneth. He died from heart and lung complications on May 6, 2016 at the age of 74, and was buried in a private ceremony in Blue Lake, near Arcata, his home. Carl was beloved by his family and friends, and was a key part of a large Arcata area community of friends he helped build for over 50 years. He was a gentle, loving, joy-filled husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, brightening the lives of all around him. Carl moved with his family to England in 1957, graduating from an American high school, Central High in Bushy Park, near London. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1963. Carl chose to join the Peace Corps, learning French and serving in the first Peace Corps group in Guinea, West Africa. After teaching English as a second language and traveling to Timbuktu and other remarkable locales, he moved to Arcata in 1965 in his VW bug. There he earned his teaching credential and completed his Masters Degree in Education at Humboldt State University. Carl taught English at McKinleyville (CA) High School for 33 years, and is remembered by many students whose lives he touched. During his career he was the key Club Advisor for 27 years, McKinleyville Kiwanis Club president and Language Arts Department Chair. Carl had three children during his first marriage, to Joanne Vest Chatfield: Geoff, Greg and Margaret, all of whom excelled at McKinleyville High. He married Susan Gayle Anderson in 1998, and after retiring in 1999, helped with Susan’s jam business, Mad River Farms, became a part-time caregiver and masseur and continued his lifelong pursuit of fine literature. He and Susan traveled as much as possible, especially enjoying Guatemala, Thailand and most recently, Australia. They visited much of the U.S. and spent significant time with each of their families. Carl, always an artist and musician (a fine cellist), honed his weaving and painting skills during retirement, and continued singing in the HSU Chorale up until shortly before he died. Carl loved being outdoors, hiking, whitewater kayaking and big-river rafting, early on with his children and latterly with Susan and friends. We remember his stories: a terrifying passage through the tunnel at Big French Creek, chasing bears while camping with his kids, fighting forest fires during college, being attacked by Teddy Boys while bicycling in England, and riding an elephant in Thailand. He adventured all his life. He marks as a life highlight listening in on cellist Pablo Casals’ master class at UC Berkeley. Carl most valued being with and caring for his friends and family. He approached these relationships honoring the dignity of all those with whom he came in contact. He brought great joy to the communities of family and friends he embraced and who loved him deeply. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and his youngest brother, Mark. He is survived by the love of his life, Susan; his three children, their spouses and children - Geoffrey, Hoa and daughter Tate; Greg, Catherine Gutfreund and sons Ben and Sam; and Margaret and Michael Pietrak and son Zeke - his brothers Bruce and David and David’s wife Jo Ann Madigan; and his remarkable and supportive community in the Arcata area. Foster My mother, Betty CHATFIELD, was getting on in years and was not in the best of health, but that does not ease the sorrow I feel over losing her. After losing my Dad 41 years ago, she and her twin sister Helen, who also suddenly found herself alone, pooled their resources and moved in together. Not only were they sisters, but they were best friends and did everything together. Helen's death 13 years ago hit Mom very hard, and she was alone again. Mom had to endure another tragic event, the sudden death of my brother Jim four years ago. Just last year another sister, Roberta, passed away. There is comfort in feeling that Mom is joining her husband, son and sisters. And, in the words of my cousin Linda, they are reuniting, partying and having a good time up there. | Hunt, Carol Lou 8/28/1942 - 10/18/2019 Grass Lake Carol Lou Hunt, of Grass Lake, Michigan, passed away Friday, October 18, 2019 at the Henry Ford Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson. She was born August 28, 1942 at the Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh, Michigan the daughter of Otis and Shirley (Howard) Chatfield. She is survived by her husband, Leon Hunt, whom she married on August 25, 1962; daughter, Shelly (David) Allard; son, Cory (Staci) Hunt; grandchildren, Bradley (Jennifer VanZandt) Husak, Courtney (Joshua Kuenz) Husak, Alex (Jordan Boldt) Husak, Matthew (Brittney Sprunger) Husak, Brendan Hunt, Samuel Hunt and Ellie Hunt; brother, Robert (Diane) Chatfield; sister, Barbara Hauch, sister-in-law, Virginia Hunt; nieces and nephews, Todd CHATFIELD, Debra (Todd) Gentner, Amy Keefe, Nathan Six, Meghan Hauch, Fred (Brittney) Hauch, Aaron (Jen) Hunt, Jason (Teri Sue) Hunt, Chris (Kyle) Hunt and their children. She was a faithful follower of the grandchildren playing sports of all kinds. She was an advocate of 4-H and helped Shelly and Cory showing livestock at the Jackson County Fair. She also helped her grandchildren in their efforts to raise and show their animals as well. From chickens, to rabbits, to goats, to sheep, to steers, she helped them all. The sheep parents named her Sister Mary Ruth because she was always helping youngsters. Carol and her husband enjoyed attending car shows and touring in their 1957 Plymouth, with their special friends Dale and Rosie Current; Bob and Darlene Wilkinson; Thom and Mo Baird; Phil, Meredith and Christy Pearson. The family wishes to say "Thank You" to Dr. Trimble, Dr. Kak and Dr. O'Neill and all of the nurses that cared for Carol and made this experience much easier. At her request, anatomical donation has taken place to The University of Michigan Medical School and a memorial service to honor the life of Carol Lou Hunt, will be held at the Hampton Funeral Home in Jackson, on Sunday, October 27th beginning at 1:00 P.M. with Chaplain Daniel Sandoval officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, October 26th from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home in Jackson. | From son of Carol Burton. Mother was adopted by a William and Celia Burton. The Illinois adoption records were sealed until about a year ago (2014). No birth father is listed on my recently released original birth certificate. Carol Burton, the birth mother, was also adopted. I recently petitioned (asked) the juvenile Court in Hennepin County, Minnesota and found out about Stella and Carol Chatfield (adopted name Burton). I found Stella's mother and father's names on Ancestry.com. Carol also had two female children before me; both also given up for adoption. One died in Arkansas about 2 years ago. I have not been able to identify the other half (?)- sister. I know that William Burton was a book binder, born in London and that his wife Celia Mauer was born in Detroit. I have pictures of Carol sent to me from some friends of hers that I tracked down in Silver Lake, Minnesota. |
