Alfred Charles Chatfield enlisted into the 4th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse on 5th February 1902 at Wallaroo, South Australia for service in the Boer War. The Battalion departed Australia on 1st April 1902 and returned on 24th and 31st July 1902.

1334 Acting Corporal Alfred Charles CHATFIELD, a 33 year old Butcher from Wallaroo, South Australia.
When WW1 broke out he enlisted on 24 May 1915 at Keswick, South Australia with a Regimental number of 1334, he reached the rank of Sergeant but when his unit was absorbed into the 3rd Light Horse in December 1915 in Egypt he reverted to Private. He was a bit of a bad lad by military standards, he was punished at different times for absence, fighting and polluting the drinking water. He returned to Australia from Egypt in May/June 1919 and was discharged on 19 August 1919.
