David Chatfield Philler, age 55, of Brunswick, and formerly of Atlanta, GA, died Sunday, April 26, 2009. Born in Redlands, CA, to June Chatfield Philler and Henry Philler, David was a devoted and inspiring teacher for the Atlanta Public Schools, serving at Sutton Middle School and many years at Grady High School and later at Glynn Academy in Brunswick, GA. At both high schools he led numerous debate teams to state and national recognition, and was greatly loved by the many students whose lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved friend Jean Greek; his second mother, Betty Mills Philler; siblings Sally Mills Bowman and Criss Mills of Atlanta, GA, Kelly Mills of Rome, GA, and Patrick Mills of Champaign, IL; aunt and uncle Patricia and Tedd Kelly of Falls Church, VA; cousins William Wooten of Clemson, SC, Greg Wooten of San Francisco, CA, and Mills Kelly, of Manassas, VA; nieces Eva Hurayt of Atlanta, GA, Anna Hullum of Austin, TX, Meghan Sutherland of Stillwater, OK, Maggie and Rory Mills of Champaign, IL; and nephew Devin Mills of Champaign, IL. He is also survived by great-nephews Webb and Mills Hullum of Austin, TX. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 11 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Brunswick, GA. A gathering of family and close friends will be held in Atlanta on May 10, 2009.
