HENRY A. PHILLER, born August 21, 1918, died on Tuesday November 11, 2008. An Atlanta native, Mr. Philler graduated from Emory University in 1938, with graduate work at Columbia University. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served for 4 years as the cryptographer attached to the White House under Presidents Roosevelt and Truman. He was in Warm Springs, GA the day that President Roosevelt died and sent the official telegram announcing the President's death to Washington before traveling on the funeral train back to the capitol. Mr. Philler was later employed as a technical editor by the aerospace industry and academia, retiring from Georgia State University in 1983. He was also a photographer, avid reader, birder and enthusiastic student of the world. Mr. Philler was proud to have been an Eagle Scout and to have served as an Elder at Central Presbyterian Church. Mr. Philler is survived by his wife of 38 years, Betty Mills Philler; their children David Philler of Brunswick, GA, Sally Mills Bowman, Criss Mills and Kelly Mills of Atlanta, and Patrick Mills of Champaign, IL; nephews William Wooten of Clemson, SC and Greg Wooten of San Francisco, CA. He also is survived by his grandchildren Eva Hurayt of Atlanta, GA, Anna Hullum of Austin, TX, and Meghan Sutherland of Stillwater, OK; and Devin, Maggie, and Rory Mills, of Champaign, IL; great-grandchildren Webb and Mills Hullum, of Austin TX; sister-in-law, Patsy Kelly of Falls Church, VA, and nephew, Mills Kelly of Manassas, VA. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 2:00pm at Central Presbyterian Church, 201 Washington Street, SW, Atlanta, GA, 30303. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any donations be made to the Central Presbyterian Church Handicap Accessibility Fund or Central Outreach Center.
