COLONIAL TOPICS
(From our Colonial Correspondent)
LONDON, JAN. 13 1893. MISCELLANEOUS.
What may be accepted as the official reply to Mr. R. L. Stevenson's accusations against Chief Justice Cedercrantz and Baron Senfft von Pilsach appears in The Times (London) of this week in the form of a letter two columns and a quarter in length from the pen of Mr Robt. Thos. CHATFIELD, the editor of the Samoan Times. He declares that Mr. Stevenson's charges, though artistically worked, have but a shadow of foundation in fact, and not to put too fine a point upon it are practically mare's nests The conclusion Mr Chatfield draws is that Mr. Stevenson is no friend to Samoa, although he poses as the champion of the oppressed and long - suffering inhabitants.

The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : Friday 17 January 1890)
Samoan News, Apia, Jan 6 1890.
(From our correspondent)
H.B.M. Consul Colonel de Coëtlogon has been in conflict with his late Vice-Consul and officer of court, Mr. R. T. CHATFIELD, over some costs which were levied in a case heard some time ago. The charges wore heavy, but Mr. Chatfield claims that they were according to a schedule of fees fixed by the High Commissioner. The authorities in Fiji, however, thought differently, and ordered the Consul to tax the costs, with the result that Chatfield was ordered to return £94 odd, which he refused to do, pleading that the fees were according to schedule, besides having been certified to by the Deputy Commissioner before being paid, which is certainly correct. The Court refused to accept his plea, and seized his furniture and effects. Messrs. Gair and Co. were instructed to sell by auction, which they did, but no person would bid for the goods except Mrs. CHATFIELD, so they were withdrawn by the officers of the Court. The goods are now stored until Fiji is communicated with.
