-----
He enlisted 14 December 1914 as a Private in the Army Pay Corps at Aldershot.
He was appointed temporary Lance Corporal 8 February 1915
He was promoted to temporary Sergeant 22 Apr 1915
He was discharged at Woking 14 February 1919

Temporary rank means he was entitled to wear the rank and use the Sergeants Mess but he didn't get paid for that rank.

Kevin Chatfield states: It looks like he never left the UK and there is no mention of medal entitlement.

Some of the handwriting is really difficult to read and at times impossible. When he was discharged from the army in 1919 he carried on in the same job as a civilian. I was wondering if he stayed there between the wars and got promoted and gained seniority and when the second war started he re-enlisted, got a commission and carried on doing the same job as before.

I’ve done a little research and found that he would not have had any medals for WW1 because he never left Woking never mind the country. During WW2 he would have got two medals, the 1939-45 War Medal and the Defence Medal. Did he pass those onto Grandpa?

He seems to have had a problem with his eyesight during the first war, there is a handwritten note which mentions that his eyesight was very bad, he had five hospital appointments in the last two years of the war in which, I think, his medical status was re-categorised downward each time.

WW1 Undated photo shows him with sergeants stripes.
WWII Joined Army and given Honorary Rank of Captain from 1948 on leaving Pay Corps.
L Chatfield Lieutenant 1940 Royal Army Pay Corps
