FATAL ACCIDENT.-An accident occurred to a man named Henry CHATFIELD, stonemason, on Saturday last about 12 o'clock, from the effects of which he died about seven o'clock on Sunday morning. An inquest was held at the Town Hall on Monday, before John Goldsbury Shorter, Esq., coroner, on view of the body of the unfortunate man, when it appeared from the evidence, that Mrs Tanner heard a noise in the yard and awoke her husband, who went down into the sitting room, and on looking out of the window he saw a man in the yard, and supposing it was some one trying to effect an entrance into the house to commit a robbery, he immediately went into the front room and opened the window, and called "police.” Duly, who was on duty in George-street, immediately went round to the back of the house, and found deceased in a stooping posture. and having obtained a light he discovered that he was bleeding dreadfully from a wound on the head. With the assistance of policeman Mortimer, he led home deceased, who was quite sensible at the time - Mr. Robert Ranking, surgeon, deposed to being called he attend deceased, on whom he found an extensive wound at the back of the head, from which the blood flowed profusely. He died about seven o'clock on Sunday morning, the cause of his death being extravantion of blood on the brain, produced by a fall.-— From the evidence of George Stanford, landlord of the Albion Shades, and James Golding, it appeared that the deceased went to the Albion Shades about half-past nine in the evening, but did not have much to drink. Witness had never seen him tipsy. Between eleven and twelve, two men went into the shades drunk, and one, named Isted, was very abusive and quarrelsome. The deceased assisted in putting this party out of the house, when they swore they would smash the windows if they were not admitted, saying they had lost a hat. The deceased was in the house at the time the party was re-admitted; but witness did not know which way he left; the general supposition being, that the deceased, fearing something would occur, had made his way out at the back of the premises, and in attempting to get over the wall into an adjoining garden, accidentally fell into the yard below, which would be a distance of twenty feet. He has left a widow and three children; he bore the character of a quiet, sober man.- Verdict, "Accidental Death." - Mr. Cagger, the foreman, proposed that the 17/- allowed the jury, should be given to the widow, which was unanimously agreed to.
The funeral of poor Chatfield who, no doubt lost his life through his wish to avoid a quarrel, took place on Thursday afternoon, in All Saints’ burial ground, when about fifty members of the Friendly Society in which he belonged, attended him to his resting place. A very strong feeling of regret at his untimely end prevails among the inhabitants of this neighboured.
