James A. Chatfield followed his father in the mercantile inclinations. He opened his own store in Wilmington and then Chicago, and then came back to Momence.
James followed in the foot steps of his father and became a member of the State General Assembly in 1881, and for 8 years he was supervisor of Momence Township.
