William A. Chatfield had the skills that were necessary to the life of a pioneer country. He was a carpenter and a millwright, and was interested in stimulating industries in the new settlements. Coming to Momence in 1844, he built the first grist mill. He also built a saw mill. He became the second representative to the State Legislature to be elected from Kankakee county, and he served there from 1856 and 1857.
