Narrative

The West Australian (Perth, WA : Tuesday 2 September 1952)
"SOMEONE" UNDER HIS BED Francis Cecil CHATFIELD, vigneron, of Caversham told Mr. F. E. A. Bateman, R.M., in the Perth Police Court yesterday that he saw "someone" getting under his bed on August 11 when he looked into a wardrobe mirror. "I was a bit surprised at the time," he said. Chatfield was giving evidence against William Indich (49), aboriginal, labourer, who denied a charge of having unlaw fully been on the premises. Chatfield said that he got hold of the accused's leg and asked: "What are you doing there?" Indich replied: "I'm drunk." Chatfield said that while he was telephoning the police Indich ran out through the back door. Wiiness gave chase until the accused picked up a hoe. Then, when Chatfield picked up a hoe, Indich turned and ran. Indich ran too fast to be drunk, Chatfield said. Mr. A. G. Down, of the Native Affairs Department, secured and adjournment so that Indich could call a witness.
