Robert E. "Bob" Lowrie, 88, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, in Sun City. Funeral services were held Aug. 28 at the First Baptist Church of Winslow. Interment was at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
He was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y. After his father's death when Bob was 9 years old, he was raised in the Masonic Children's Home in Fort Worth, Texas. It was there that he graduated from high school in 1939.
In 1940, Bob was lovingly "adopted" by Karen and Regina Brandon, Eric P. and Madie Arcee Greer Sr., and the entire Greer family.
Bob married Rosalie Thornton on Dec. 12, 1944, in the First Baptist Church of Winslow.
He became a clerk for the U.S. Border Patrol, and then served in the U.S. Army from 1944-46 in Hawaii and Saipan during the Second World War. From 1942-81 he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and after 40 years, he retired as assistant to the superintendent.
Bob served on the Winslow City Council for two years from 1956-58. He also served his community as president of the Winslow Memorial Hospital Board of Directors when the present building was erected.
He served as deacon in the First Baptist Church of Winslow for over 50 years, where he also taught adult Sunday School classes for 60 years with his gift of teaching the scriptures.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Helen Lowrie; his sister, Dorothy Balcar; his mother-in-law, Florence Thornton; and his brother-in-law, Dr. Jay Gartman.
