Arthur Dove Lowrie was a Corporal in the US Marines and was given a medical discharge before World War I ended, having been shot in the foot by an aerial machine gun. Two other bullets were lodged in his gas mask and back pack.
He received the Purple Heart. He was in one notable battle just before being wounded - the Battle of Belleau Woods, which was one of the turning points in the war. His division still wears a distinctive cord awarded by the French Government.
