James Holmes Stevens, Jr., was born in Bastrop, Louisiana, on 23 Oct 1862 and went with his parents to Pike County, Mississippi, in 1867 or early 1868. As a young boy, James fell from a water tank and injured his hip, rendering him slightly lame for life. James attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford (Ole Miss) and worked for the firm of S.W. Rawlins, Commission Merchants, in New Orleans, for a number of years. Afterwards, he went into the lumber business in southern Mississippi and owned and ran his own sawmill. James liked reading and music and was a talented carpenter.
James Holmes Stevens, Jr., died of a sudden heart attack at the home of his sister, Sarah May "Sally" Stevens Ulmer, in Picayune, Mississippi, on 21 September 1920.
