According to his World War I draft registration, Clifton was of medium height and had brown hair and brown eyes. A boyhood accident crippled his left leg, for which he wore a leg brace.

The book, Stevens-Washburn with Related Lines, by Annie Stevens Jones (1945), with a later supplement (1973) by Frances U. Bittman, lists Clifton's middle name variously as "Lanier" and "LeViers". Clifton himself gave his middle name as "Lee". That is what shows on his WWI draft registration, which he signed as Clifton Lee Stevens, and on the birth certificate of my father Richard Milton Stevens, Clifton's second of three sons. The middle name LeViers appears on Clifton's tombstone.
