He married Helen Bos in Pine City, Minn., on April 15, 1952. They resided in the town of Barronett where they farmed. Basil was a milk truck driver and patrolled the roads for the town of Barronett. He also drove the Head Start bus. Basil was a member of Barronett Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife; five sons, James Jr. of Trego, Steven (Darlene) of Hertel, John of Webster, Ernie of Shell Lake, and Dean (Serena) of Spooner; four daughters, Bonnie (Jack) Moser of Webster, Connie (Terry) Smith of Trego, Helen Jean Mortensen of Spooner, and May Mortensen of Shell Lake; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, David of Sarona; and one sister, Rachel Gullickson of Shell Lake. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian; three sisters; and two brothers. |

She was born on October 1, 1923, in Barronett to John and Catherine (Chatfield) Mortensen. She attended Woodyard Elementary School and graduated from Shell Lake High School in 1944. She married Jacob Gullickson in Barronett on September 19, 1945. He preceded her in death on March 25, 2003. Rachel wore many hats. She was a homemaker, the Deputy Washburn County Clerk, and worked at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College. She was also active in her faith, serving with the Heart Lake Lutheran Ladies Aid, Salem Lutheran Church Women and Barronett Church Women. She also served as president of the Tuesday Club and the Hospital Auxiliary. She served as organist at Barronett Lutheran Church for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Ellen Kay (Roy) Matson of Marquette, Mich.; one grandchild, Suzanne (Chad) Matson-Broadus of Richfield, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Zoe and Xander Broadus; and one brother, David P. Mortensen of Shell Lake. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at Barronett Lutheran Church. Pastor Lorna Halaas will officiate. Burial will be in Shell Lake Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Darrell L. Petz, Curtis J. Johnson, Charles D. Mortensen, Steve Mortensen, Ernie Mortensen and Karl Leckel. |
