See attached paper notice of his 50th wedding anniversary. My information on the Wakool was probably wrong not sure where I got that from - however the info below may also be wrong but definitely he came to Australia in 1911 because I can remember my grandmother telling me that she followed Ernest some years after him because her mother insisted that she meet up with him - as marriage was for life and that she had no right leaving him. Alfred Ernest (Ern as he was known) I believe he joined his brother who was living in Inverell at the time. My grandmother told me about how she arrived in Australia and then with three young children had to travel to Inverell (about 500 Ks) and all the time believed it was a god forsaken country - hot, dusty, brown grass and awful trees (eucalypts) etc. and queried why she obeyed her mother. ----- Emigrated from Liverpool to Sydney, Australia 1911 Name: Mr Ernest Chatfield Gender: Male Age: 33 Birth Date: abt 1878 Departure Date: 21 Sep 1911 Port of Departure: Liverpool, England Destination Port: Sydney, Australia Ship Name: Medic Shipping Line: White Star Line Official Number: 124220 Master: J Williams |

Winifred Muriel Chatfield b.25/2/1920 died Jun.1980 Havering. Were they still together in 1980? Did Frederick notify her death? If not, is it known what happened between 1964 and 1980? Did they separate perhaps? (if so, he may have emigrated). Did they have a child who'd maybe emigrated? If still together when Winifred died did he decide to emigrate too and live with this child? I certainly feel that Alfred F. Chatfield born Dec.qtr.1918 and Frederick Chatfield bc.1918 are one and the same and that the likelihood is that either he emigrated some point after 1964 (when we know they were still together) or, indeed, it is even possible he is still alive (would be 95 now) or died sometime after 2005 when online records stop. Lots of permutations and you might have family history which you haven't mentioned - certainly, it distinctly looks like Alfred F. and Frederick are one and the same and neither of these names appears in death indexes up to 2005. The Memorial stands on the high ground ('Hill 104') behind the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Fouilloy, which is about 2 km north of Villers-Bretonneux on the east side of the road to Fouilloy. The Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux is approached through the Military Cemetery, at the end of which is an open grass lawn which leads into a three-sided court. The two pavilions on the left and right are linked by the north and south walls to the back (east) wall, from which rises the focal point of the Memorial, a 105 foot tall tower, of fine ashlar. A staircase leads to an observation platform, 64 feet above the ground, from which further staircases lead to an observation room. This room contains a circular stone tablet with bronze pointers indicating the Somme villages whose names have become synonymous with battles of the Great War; other battle fields in France and Belgium in which Australians fought; and far beyond, Gallipoli and Canberra. On the three walls, which are faced with Portland stone, are the names of 10,885 Australians who were killed in France and who have no known grave. The 'blocking course' above them bears the names of the Australian Battle Honours. After the war an appeal in Australia raised £22,700, of which £12,500 came from Victorian school children, with the request that the majority of the funds be used to build a new school in Villers-Bretonneux. The boys' school opened in May 1927, and contains an inscription stating that the school was the gift of Victorian schoolchildren, twelve hundred of whose fathers are buried in the Villers-Bretonneux cemetery, with the names of many more recorded on the Memorial. Villers-Bretonneux is now twinned with Robinvale, Victoria, which has in its main square a memorial to the links between the two towns.
