Agnes Bernardette on birth certificate. Birth shown as 24th. ===== From Agnes Brennan Chatfield, My Grandfather had an accident in the quarry, probably owned by my grandmother, as he came from Carrowntober (from memory) he never worked after that, thus my father had to go out to work, but I don't know when grandfather died. As a child I remember playing in the small quarry in the field called The Rocks. The field, owned by the Marist sisters, was sold to a developer some years ago, it is now an estate of expensive housing. My sister, Mary, once said, she felt it was a shame the land had not been developed as a park, but I don't suppose many people thought about it, or indeed had any say in what eventuated. The land is very close to the old part of town and a prime site for housing. My uncles Brass(Thomas Francis) and Kiddo(Joseph) went to Philadelphia after my Grandfather died, probably circa 1910, my dad was a boy of 14 and he had to go out to work, since granny was then alone. I understand much of our land, including what is now the Convent school, was sold to pay for grandfather's medical bills, there was no social security in those days. Bernie, now aged 84 built his house on dad's land, it fronts onto the main road. We have another field further up the side-road where Bernie has built, and in between is a field belonging to the Marists. I wonder if that land too originally belonging to the Brennan's? October 2014. |

2010 living in Tubercurry, Sligo and Inchicore, Dublin. ----- Info on James Murray I was born in Tubbercurry in 1947 and ... After I left school when I was fourteen I started painting and decorating and spent two years working with the Brennan brothers, Bernie and Eddie, first class tradesmen and decorators. Their father Pakie was the first person I saw graining in the traditional way. He was the best imitation grainer that I have ever known, he was also a master sign writer. Bernie was and is one of the best men I ever seen at lining, a real master and Eddie was also a real professional and "a hound with a brush" as his father used to say. I learned a lot from the Brennan's. |

Eddie died at 8pm (Irish Summer time) yesterday (10 Jul 2017). Mary called us at 11:30 her time, 8:30am today our time to give us the news. He had a fall at home about four weeks ago and went to Sligo General hospital; then got pneumonia which didn't respond to any antibiotics. He was due to go to the hospice but they kept him in at the hospital and the palliative care doctors took over the treatment. Mary had just gone home after many sleepless hours with him and she got the call that he had breathed his last breath. She went back in with her sisters and the prayed for him at his bedside for a long time. Not quite sure whether the funeral will be this Thursday or next but we will not be going. We last saw him when he was home after his first fall in 2015 and we were in Israel. Love, Martin CHATFIELD, brother-in-law. ===== Info on James Murray I was born in Tubbercurry in 1947 and ... There was never a time as far as I can remember that I wasn't doodling with a pencil or dabbling with paint. I have had no professional training, just learning as I went along. When I was in my late teens I brought some of my work to Sean Keating R.H.A. He gave me great encouragement and told me no matter what happened to keep painting and so I have. After I left school when I was fourteen I started painting and decorating and spent two years working with the Brennan brothers, Bernie and Eddie, first class tradesmen and decorators.
