Find A Grave Memorial# 117862005 ===== My Grandmother told me her fathers name was Tewaunki (William Washington Sands is his English name) and that he was the son or (grandson)of "War Eagle" ( his wife's name was Waumeni) chief of the Wampanoag from what I have been able to work out this would be around 1750. Jodie Booth. Don't believe that Tewaunki was truly a slave, though he may have been an indentured labourer for a year or two before making his escape. Sad to say, he was never named "War Chief" as far as I can tell, though his father may have been thus called. ----- Washington William Sands 1827-1902 # 1827 Born in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. To Nathan and Unknown Born into the Wampanoag Tribe. # 1840 He was formally indentured (made a slave) on a farm near Carmel in Putnam County, New York, USA till the age of 21. # abt 1843 Baptist conversion in a pond outside Carmel age 16. # abt 1843 he ran from the farm to Boston via Connecticut. # Got 20 month prison time for stealing a sea chest.# Spent 3 years in a state prison at Charlestown. # abt 1848 got a berth as a cook for a Schooner engaged in the coasting service. # While back in Boston a boarding house he was asleep in burned to the ground. # Spent 2 years at sea on a Whaling ship. # A boat he was on sank a short distance from Fyall. He was saved by a fishing schooner from Cape Cod after spending 30 hours in the sea. # On another Boat a wind jammer named "New York" heading from Liverpool to New York with 600 emigrants of Ireland, Dutch and German decent (Washington was the cook) The boat did not make it all the way and crashed into rocks ¼ mile from the shore, there was a trial for mutiny against the crew. # 1860 Shipped out of Gravesend as cook of the "Stag Hound" built in 1850, bound for San Francisco with coal. The Stag Hound was formally a Tea trader running from Hong Kong to London and New York. Whilst on board there was mutiny, at Anjer, in 1860, where the first and second mate were reported stabbed by members of the crew. # 1862 He was body servant to the Colonel of the 2nd Virginian regiment in the 2nd Bull Run / Manassas (Federals). # 1868 Married Sarah Crofield in White chapel. # 1884 Arrived on the "Kaiserine" to Manzanillo Cuba to an outbreak of yellow fever. # 1884 Arrived in London and saw William Booth speak and until his death was a loyal Soldier of the Salvation Army. # 1891 was living in Brighton with Sarah name on census Washington W Sanks age 63. #1892 Widowed aged 65. # 1895 Married Rosaline Elsie Chatfield 27th Feb 1895 she was 22 he was 67. # 1896 Edward Washington Sands was Born 26th Jul 1896. Edward had only 1 child. # 1900 Retired from the Salvation Army as War cry Sergeant. # 1902 Passed away on the 2 May age 75.
