Was Flag-Capt. of the "Medina" which conveyed their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary to India for the Coronation Durbar 1911-12. Served as Flag-Capt. H.M.S. "Lion" 1913-17 and H.M.S. "Queen Elizabeth" 1917-19 to Adm. Sir David Beatty commdg Battle Cruiser Fleet throughout the first world war, and obtained his C.B. for the Heligoland (1914) and Dogger Bank (1915) actions, and the C.M.G. for Jutland (1916).
Received his K.C.M.G. in April 1919 when Sir David's flag was hauled down in the "Queen Elizabeth". Mentd in despatches 1914, 1916. 4th Sea Lord at the Admiralty 1919-20. Asst. Chief of the Naval Staff 1920-22; Rear-Adm. Commdg 3rd Light Cruiser Sqdn 1922-24; 3rd Sea Lord and Controller of hte Navy 1925-8, Commanded Atlantic Fleet 1930, Mediterranean Fleet from 1930; K.C.B. 1922.
