Audrey Nemec, 86, passed away August 11, 2009.
She was born August 10, 1923 in Hebburn-on-Tyne, England to William and Minnie Lauder Jenkinson. Many of her younger years were spent under the kind guidance of Maggie Bell, who she said was much like a guardian to her and her sister Doris.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband John Nemec in 2004, and her son James Nemec in 2003.
She is survived by her sister Doris of Coventry, England; her two sons John Nemec of Deming, New Mexico and Daniel Nemec of White Cloud, Michigan; and one daughter, Carol Nemec Otwell of Columbus, New Mexico.
Audrey met her husband John when he was stationed in Central Europe during World War II and she was commissioned as a British Communications Officer. They were married in England in 1945 before John returned to the U.S. to receive his Honorable Discharge from the service.
Shortly thereafter, Audrey left her home and family in England and sailed to America on the Queen Mary to begin her life with John. They made their home together in Deming. Over the years, Audrey worked as a newspaper reporter, sold ladies fine clothing, was a talented seamstress, and an excellent cook.
Early on she met and befriended other British war brides who had married servicemen during the war and sailed to America just as she had. The ladies formed a local club, which in more recent years became known as "The British Tumbleweeds."
In the late 1940's the club's membership probably numbered 20 or more. Now with Audrey's passing, there are only one or two of the original local British war brides left to survive her.
Friends and family will miss the rare blend of her English and John's Czechoslovakian lifestyles that came to be so naturally woven together in her. She leaves behind some very special friends here and abroad, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Mountain View Cemetery. Father Josh DuPlissey of Holy Family Catholic Church will officiate at Audrey's final blessing.
Family and friends are invited to attend a fellowship gathering at the Holy Family Parish Hall after the service.
