The Boston Traveler - Aug 11 1863
Death of Col. John L. Chatfield of the 6th Connecticut Volunteers died at his honie in Waterbury at quarter past six o’- clock, Sunday afternoon, from wounds received..."=====
He removed to Waterbury in 1851.
-----
He was among the first to offer his services when after the attack on Fort Sumpter the President issued his call for 75,000 men. He left Waterbury, CT April 20, with his company, previously the Waterbury City Guard, of which he had been captain for some years. While in Washington in June he was promoted to be Colonel of the Third Regiment. Three months later he returned and was appointed Colonel of the Sixth Regiment. At Fort Wagner he led his regiment over the parapets of the enemy but fell mortally wounded. Beside him fell the color bearer, shot dead, when Col. CHATFIELD, with one leg shattered below the knee, yet helped to hold up the colors. Later he was borne from the field and brought to his home, but died Aug 9 1863. At his funeral business was suspended in the city and military men and others throughout the state assembled to honor his memory. A monument in his honor was unveiled at Riverside cemetery, with impressive ceremonies, Sept. 13, 1887.
"The Chatfield Family" by William C. Sharpe 1896.
-----
CHATFIELD MONUMENT, Riverside Cemetery, Waterbury, is significant historically because it memorializes a Civil War officer from Waterbury who died of service-connected causes. Colonel John Lyman Chatfield was wounded in action at Fort Wagner and invalided home. He returned to the South, apparently too soon, for he came home to die of gangrene. His date of death was August 9, 1863. Riverside Cemetery records show that he was re-interred at the present location on April 22, 1864, having earlier been buried in Riverside lot 22M. When the monument was erected is unknown. Since George E. Bissell was not well established as early as 1864, conjecture suggests that he may have sculpted CHATFIELD MONUMENT after his first European trip, 1875-1876, by which time he would have had the expertise consistent with European study as demonstrated here.
